Fourteen-Forty NYC Studio Tour

There is nothing that makes us happier than touring beautiful spaces filled with beautiful people! So when the lovely Tricia Kim from the design studio Fourteen-Forty invited us to tour her studio, we screamed with glee. With the help of photographer Rebecca Yale, check out all the pretty design details and inspiration we found in her West Village studio and find out a little more about Tricia and her beautiful work.

SMP Living: What inspires you? What inspires your designs?

Fourteen-Forty: Our designs are inspired by our clients. Each couple who walks through our doors brings a unique story and it’s our job to tell it. Our couples respond to our ability to mix old and new, loose and clean, modern and vintage in our uniquely balanced way – we are the anti-fussy, any-frilly stationer, with preferences for clean lines, sharp typography, and a bit of whimsy thrown in here and there.

SMP Living: What is different about custom invitations?

Fourteen-Forty: Most of our clients have searched around online or in stores and have been unable to find something that feels like it encompasses their wedding. Whether we’re drawing their venue, creating a map, mixing printing processes, or using unconventional materials, there are so many ways to customize that just aren’t possible without working with a studio like ours. Our designers help couples make the best aesthetic choices, ensuring that they have a beautifully designed suite that is one of a kind.

SMP Living: What would you say is the most rewarding part of your job? Most challenging?

Forteen-Forty: The most rewarding part is when we present a couple with designs that go beyond what they were even imaging for their suite. As the designers, it’s our job to take an idea to the next level and not just stop at what is expected. The most challenging thing is also the same – to keep coming up with fresh ideas and not rest on what is easy and already out there.

SMP Living: What advice would you give new brides starting to think about their invitations?

Fourteen-Forty: Designing invitations is obviously a visually driven process. That can be intimidating to those not familiar with design language. But we have a process to hone in on creative likes and dislikes and it works for couples whether they have a creative background or not. We also love to utilize Pinterest. We encourage all our clients to gather images that resonate with them, whether they have to do with weddings or not. Pictures of textures and colors as well as people and places can all provide clues to the aesthetic we should be pursuing, and as designers, we’re really good at figuring that out.
