Starry Nursery Tour

This nursery makes me happy for so many reasons. It’s designed to perfection by our very own Jess, packed to the brim with adorable DIYs (see here, here and here) and filled with so much love you can feel it through the screen. Oh, and the chief resident, little Mr. Grey, is just as cute as they come. It’s hard not to love every image from Ruth Eileen, and you can see them all here.

I was SO excited to decorate a nursery for the impending arrival of my son, and then I hit my third trimester. Suddenly, standing on a stepstool to paint the ceiling was a lot less appetizing. So here we are, 10 months after his arrival, finishing his nursery. Better late than never! And now we finally have a space we all love.

Our nursery started with some amazing hand me downs- namely, the crib and changing table my parents used for my three sisters and I- still in great condition. Also, a trundle daybed which isn’t the cutest but is absolutely what we needed for the nursery-guestroom combo in our little two bedroom house.

What does a person do with a daybed? Especially in combination with a low, angled ceiling. I don’t see them often and had no idea how to make it cute, so this was a real sticking point for a while. I decided that the best thing to do was make that area of the room as symmetrical as possible and visually bring the focus up and let the bed fade back. Bring on the neutral bed linens, matching end tables, and colorful pillows!

I wanted the nursery to feel like it belongs with the rest of the house, but is still a wonderous, imaginative space for a child. I tried to balance any colorful focal points, like the constellation-painted ceiling (inspired by Grand Central Station), with lots of blank space to soothe the eyes.

These Ikea frames were perfect for a DIY art piece above the crib- it’s the first time in my life I’ve been excited about plastic instead of glass in the frame! When Grey starts being able to stand and reach out of the crib, we’ll move the crib away from the wall just to be safe.

I’m not going to lie, I selfishly picked the mobile just because I’ve been obsessed with it for a few years, even though other mobiles look more baby-friendly. I never thought Grey would like it as much as he does, but it’s easily his favorite part of the room! He is so excited to watch it spin and try to catch the stars.

The gallery wall is filled with little treasures… a footprint of Grey’s, a vintage print from my Father in Law, a few DIY pieces, and some vintage blocks that spell his name.
