DIY: Gold and Marble Shelves
Recently I've been renovating my home office. It's been a work in progress and I'm far from done. I wanted to wait until everything was complete before sharing with you but so many of you have asked about these gold shelves on Instagram so I wanted to give you a sneak peek. I must warn you, once you spray paint your first item gold, you won't want to stop! I used this tutorial to get started but changed a few things around. This DIY project is so easy and fun plus it’s inexpensive as you can complete the whole project for under $100.
Materials needed:
Step 1: Assemble the Ikea shelving unit (refer to assembly manual). Pay close attention as you may end up with the wrong parts facing forward if you don’t.
Step 2: Set the shelving unit outside (or in a well ventilated area) on top of the drop cloth or cardboard and spray paint in 3 to 4 light coats. Don’t apply heavy coats of paint as they will bubble up and will look very spotty. The trick is light layers. If you apply in a warm area, the paint will dry in a matter of minutes so you can apply the next coat right away. Once the entire shelf unit looks consistently painted, let it dry for approximately 45 minutes or so.
*Tip: Make sure to press firmly all the down on the spray paint can nozzle otherwise the paint will splatter out and bubble up.
Step 3: While the paint is drying, start covering the 3 particleboard shelves with the natural marble contact paper. Properly line the paper up with the shelves, cut and then apply like a giant sticker.
*Tip: Use the backside of the contact paper as a guideline to measure and cut. Snip off any excess paper around the edges. Make sure to smooth out any air bubbles using a credit card at a 45 degree angle and pushing from the middle of the shelf out towards the edges.
Step 4: Place the particleboard and glass shelves into the gold framing sections. Voila! Decorate with magazines, purses and any home decor pieces.
*Tip: If you want light to shine down from above, you’ll want the very top shelf to be glass.

I also spray painted my ampersand and eiffel tower book ends. They were both originally black. Don't they look pretty? What a difference a little gold can do!
