How To Travel The World For Free

Despite what you think, you don't have to be rich to travel. You don't need a lot of money at all. If you budget right, do your research and plan ahead, you may not even have to spend anything. That's right. You could travel the world for free.

1. Work Overseas
So you might want to holiday overseas but working there will get you to that, if you want it that bad. This is a way to earn money for your travels. Anything from a tour guide, traveling around Europe, or a bartender can help pay your bills and fund your travels. The places I highly recommend researching into are Global Work & Travel, Work Travel Company and Alliances Abroad.

2. Teach English Overseas
All you need is the ability to speak English fluently for most places, and possibly a TEFL certificate. It's a well paying job, and one that is high in demand. Here's a more in-depth guide if you want to read more about it, but basically some companies will even pay for your flight over depending how much they need a teacher. Contracts can go from as short as 6 months to even a couple of years, and you'll get to spend all that time experiencing another culture. Pretty cool.

3. Free Flying
Something that is usually overlooked because it can be a bit tedious and mind boggling to start looking into, but there are many ways to get free flights.. seriously! Signing up for travel credit cards, collect miles and then fly for free. If you're serious about this, watch out for deals because they're always offering something new. It's all about that timing. Sign up for all the airline mailing lists, put everything on your card and shop at their member stores to earn more points. If there's a will, there's a way.

4. Housesit
So does that mean free accommodation? Why yes it does. What you're essentially doing is watching someone elses house while they go on their vacation, but technically you'll be on your vacation. It can range anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months, and you'll get a kitchen. It's a win-win. If you're still interested, I urge you to try one of these housesitting companies: House careers, Mind My House & The Caretaker Gazette.

5. Couchsurf
Couch Surf allows you to travel like a local, stay in someone's home and experience the world in a way money can't buy. You might get the option of an air mattress, couch or possibly bed - either way, it's free accommodation! Plus you'll meet loads of amazing people and make friends all over the world.

6. Volunteer Work For Accommodation
In exchange for a few hours of volunteering throughout the week, websites like Work Away will give you free accommodation. There's a small sign up free (something like 10 euro), but if you're seriously considering it, then I'd say it's more than worth it.

In return for volunteer help, WWOOF hosts offer food, accommodation and opportunities to learn about organic lifestyles. It stands for 'World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms' which means it's for people who'd like to travel to the countryside. It'd be great to learn about the culture, try something new & get outdoors.

8. Help Exchange
Very similar to WWOF, however Help Exchange also offers other places to volunteer such as Bed & Breakfasts, hostels and sailboats who will exchange volunteer work for food and accommodation.

9. Au Pair
The Au Pair program is a cultural exchange program which allows young people from all over the world to live with a family in a foreign country. You spend a year or so living with a host family in your country of choice and taking care of children. I've heard of many wonderful experiences using this program, and life long friendships.

10. Escape Normal Jobs
If you're looking to escape your 9-5 job, join the community of Escape Normal readers who are living life by landing seasonal travel jobs, participating in volunteer vacations and making money online. From exotic retreat centers in Costa Rica to adventure kayak tour-guide positions, there will sure be something to throw you in the deep end. Many of the employers will include food and housing as apart of your contracts, so it is even more affordable for you.
