Ain't No Angel (Second Chances #2) by Peggy L. Henderson

What it’s about

Delaney Goodman has been running from her painful past all her life. Dreams of working with horses have long been replaced with the reality of doing anything to make ends meet. About to hit rock bottom, she accepts a stranger's proposition, even if it sounds too good to be true. She figures she has nothing, not even her dignity, to lose. She awakens in an unfamiliar setting - and century - and quickly discovers that she will need more than her charm to complete the task assigned to her.
On the surface, Tyler Monroe has everything going for him - good looks, the respect of his friends and neighbors, and a thriving horse ranch. However, his past holds deep wounds with thick emotional scars. When a brazen, beautiful woman arrives in town, Tyler makes an impulsive decision that will cause him to question everything he knows. Tyler is unlike any man Laney has ever met. Laney is exactly the kind of woman Tyler wants to avoid. As the attraction between them grows, questions arise that stretch the boundaries of trust for both. The secrets that threaten to tear them apart could be exactly what Tyler and Laney need to bring them together.

Steffi’s Review

4 stars In book two in the Second Chances series, time travel and match making combine to help two people with serious trust issues find their other half.
Ain’t No Angel tells the story of Laney Goodman, a young woman down on her luck with a love for horses and Tyler Monroe, a horse rancher who can’t seem to make peace with the past. Similar to the first book in this series, the contemporary character finds herself in a bad situation. Jake Owens from Come Home To Me was facing the death penalty in prison – Laney doesn’t see any way out of her situation but to sell her body as an escort. When she gets the chance to work on a horse ranch in Montana, she could never have imagined that it would be in the 19thcentury and she was playing the role of a mail order bride for broody, handsome Tyler Monroe. Tyler always intended to send back the bride his foreman, Gabe, had chosen for him but when he sees Laney exit the stagecoach he can’t resist her. Married to a beautiful woman but not wanting to fall in love, so as not to end up the same way as his father when his mother left them, Tyler doesn’t make it easy for Laney to break down his walls, but she gives it everything she has – especially since she has come to love the ranch and Tyler so much.
While the plot of this novel isn’t very elaborate, Tyler and Laney really made this story shine for me. Tyler is guarded and still hurting over his father’s death and his mother’s abandonment, but he never sets out to hurt Laney and always respects her and takes her knowledge of horses seriously. Laney is independent and strong but at the same time, does everything in her power to fit into this strange time and world. Laney and Tyler make a wonderful couple; they complement each other beautifully and treat each other with respect and affection. Even though they are both facing personal issues and there are strange things happening on the ranch, they try to make the best of their situation. Exactly how I want my couple to be! Another lovely addition to this time travel series, I am looking forward to the final book in the Second Chances series which will feature Gabe, Tyler’s foreman.
