Crista’s Review

4 stars! Holy smokes, I devoured this book!
There were lots of things that I loved about this book, some things that bothered me about this book, but there is one unmistaken fact: I could not get enough of this book and read it any spare moment I could find!

I am a big fan of this author and, was so pleased to see her branch away from the Dublin Street series (although I also highly recommend those books as well!) This book gives us a fresh new look at a very predictable plot: Wealthy and aloof CEO meets up with an unlikely love interest. The two individuals share combustible chemistry, and said CEO tries hard not to admit that he’s falling in love for the very first time. Hero is emotionally stunted and can be a complete jerk to the heroine. Does any of this sound familiar?

Strangely enough, even though I feel like I have read this plot numerous times before (Fifty Shades of Gray and the Crossfire series to name a few), Samantha Young manages to make it all seem new and unique.

Caine and Alexa share a similarity in that Alexa’s father negatively impacted both of their lives. Caine becomes aware of Alexa’s heritage and sets out to completely avoid her, and in some ways destroy her career. However, he is also attracted to her and can’t seem to stop thinking about her. He decides to hire her as his personal assistant. The way that Caine treats Alexa until mid-way through this novel is almost unforgiveable (emphasis on almost). With stunning precision, Samantha Young seems to know just when to redeem Caine enough to keep him attractive to both our heroine and the reader!

This book is told from Alexa’s point of view, and it definitely would’ve been helpful to get inside Caine’s head from time to time. This author does not give us any tangible proof about what Caine is feeling and thinking about Lexie, and to have that perspective would’ve been helpful.

I enjoyed the heat that existed between Caine and Lexie, but watching this couple spend time together and learn how to be friends is the part of this book that I will remember the most.

If you like your heroes sweet, kind, and sensitive, this is definitely NOT the book for you. However, if you are ok with a domineering, powerful, successful, and yet tormented hero, this is THE hero for you! For me, this book really worked and I give it my full recommendation!
