10 Minute Messy Waves

Messy waves are one of my favorite ways to style my hair. It’s also one of my most common because of how simple it is. Here’s a few quick steps to getting a carefree, messy look, and I’ve also linked all of my favorite products below. A little side note – I use Kevin Murphy a lot but they are actually only available to purchase in a salon so if you want to try (which I recommend!) you’ll have to do a little research to find a salon that stocks them near you.

1. Good shampoo and conditioner is where it starts. I didn’t realize what I was missing until I started using products like Oribe, R Co and Kevin Murphy. My bleached hair actually feels like it gets softer and healthier each time I wash it. I like to let my hair air dry if I have time, otherwise a quick blow-dry while using your fingers to comb through your hair works too. I always use some type of leave-in conditioner and a Wet Brush to get through tangles without damaging my hair. Wet Brushes are total game-changers if you’ve never tried before! I also like to put a smoothing cream in to de-frizz while it’s still wet. Another key product is using a heat protectant to keep your hair healthy before blowdrying and curling.

Shampoos & Conditioners: Oribe | Kevin Murphy | R Co

Wet Brushes: The Wet Brush | The Dry Bar

Leave-in Conditioners: Kevin Murphy | R Co

Smoothing Creams: Bumble & Bumble | Kevin Murphy

Heat Protectants: Bumble & Bumble

2. Split your hair in two layers: top and bottom. Take a flat iron or curing wand and twist sections of your hair away from your face. No need to hold the tool on your hair any longer than it takes to twist through the ends. I recently got the T3 Micro Whirl Trio and a couple other clip-on barrels. I love that it’s just one tool where you can interchange barrels to get different size and shape curls. Genius!

3. Once all of your hair is in loose curls, apply a texture spray throughout, but keep it away from your roots so your hair doesn’t get too greasy later in the day. I really like this Kevin Murphy dry finishing spray. It’s sort of a 3-in-1 that gives volume, texture and hold. If you feel like you need a little more smoothing on frizzier hair, sometimes I use Marula Oil for a more finished look. On the other hand, if you’re working with day-two hair or feel a little greasy, I am a big fan of dry shampoo to add volume and remove excess oils.

Texture Sprays: Kevin Murphy | Oribe | Bumble & Bumble

Hair Sprays: R Co | Kérastase

Oils: Marula | Oribe

Dry Shampoos: Bumble & Bumble | Kevin Murphy | Kérastase

4. Lastly, comb through with a large tooth comb or use your hands to smooth without loosing the wave.

If your hair is dry, you can do this in about 10 minutes! It might take a few tries getting used to curling with a flat iron or wand if you’re not already familiar, but once you are this will become a really quick way to get out the door!
