Guten Tag, y’all!

The first month of the new year is almost over–already! Can you believe it? Time’s flying. And just what have I been up to? Glad you asked!

Loving: Getting out and about

I spent so much of last year stuck inside learning German or knocked out on the couch (pregnancy is exhausting). Then, of course, I’ve spent a lot of time since September staying in and looking after Baby Z. Aside from dropping off Babycakes at daycare and taking him to his music class, I hadn’t really been getting out much. But I’ve slowly emerged from my hermit’s cave, with a trip to the mall here, a visit to the grocery store there (don’t laugh! Going to the grocery store with an infant is a big deal–am I right, fellow parents?). Last week I had a lovely lunch/hangout with a couple of other expat women, and it was the absolute best. We laughed and compared our Before lives (in South Africa, Brazil and the US of A) to our Now lives here in Deutschland. I’m pretty sure I overstayed my welcome (I seriously didn’t want to leave–sorry, Ingrid!) but a good time was had by all.

Reading: The Count of Monte Cristo

Most of my reading right now takes place at night, between feedings. Since I’m usually pretty groggy, I’m reading an old favorite. It seems a bit cheesier this go-round (especially the overwrought dialogue), but I still love a good revenge tale. In fact, this book is probably what sparked my love for stories about payback, and explains why Kill Bill is one of my favorite movies. At any rate, it’s good late night entertainment. I’ve actually been cheating on this book, and have finished Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah and am currently reading Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children.

Watching: Code Geass and Style Out There

I’m not really watching anything of note, but I did watch the first season of Code Geass, an anime series that is very good, despite being filled with annoying Pizza Hut product placement. I also watched these cool short documentaries about fashion subcultures on Refinery 29.

Thinking about: How fast the years go by

How fast my little boy is growing up. On Monday, I dropped off his school enrollment form; tomorrow, he’s got a soccer tournament. These last five years really have flown by.

Listening to: Trippy violinists

Chargaux. I could put their song Lullaby on repeat and leave it there.

Working on: Balance

Finding the time to be an artist, parent and wife simultaneously. It’s an ongoing process.

Wishing for: Sigh…

Strength for a friend who’s making a hard decision. Wish I could be there with you!

So–what’s new with you? Read any good books? Leave a comment below telling me what you’ve been up to!
