FREE Phonics Assessment for K-3rd grades

Phonics. It’s such a hot topic in the literacy world. And for good reason. Kids need to have a good grasp on phonics to help them read and spelling thousands of words. And this quick and simple phonics assessment can help you, as the teacher, to quickly find the phonics skills your K-3rd grader needs to work on.

Please note that this phonics assessment is developmentally appropriate for kids after they have all the beginning reading skills under their belt and are now reading. You can find a reading readiness checklist in my post, Is My Child Ready to Read? or a beginning reading assessment over at Mrs. Jones’ Creation Station.

Phonics Assessment {for K-3rd Grades}

This quick phonics assessment has a teacher recording sheet and 3 student assessment pages with simple word lists, based on their phonics patterns.

The pages start off with a word family assessment, where the student has to created different real and silly words. Then it moves to more difficult phonics patterns, such as CVCe, CVVC, and even open and closed syllable patterns.

As kids read the words, you can use the 1-page recording sheet to record the students’ correct and incorrect answers as well as date it when they complete it.

If you want to get multiple uses out of the students pages, it works well to slip them into plastic sleeve protectors or you can laminate them.
