Work It :: Practice Isn’t Overrated

I spoke at a conference January 2014 as a tandem keynote speaker. I shared the stage and dual presented with someone really brilliant. And then, I bombed it. Like BOMBED. I was so nervous that it didn’t matter what great insights I had to share. My delivery of the content was all that the audience could focus on (and no, this wasn’t just in my mind because the post-conference survey respondents spoke loud and clear about it).

After that I was so disappointed in myself. Why? Because I KNEW I could have done better. After a while, I realized then what I had to do—I had to DO better. My point is, the only way we get better at something is to actually practice the doing part.

This thought process seems pretty obvious if we were talking about learning to ice skate or even icing a cake. So then why is it so hard to comprehend when we talk about it in a professional way? If we want to be better at something, we have to start somewhere, put ourselves out there, and then work to get better at it. That’s the only way it will happen.

This past weekend I spoke on a panel in front of 200. It was no keynote-type pressure but I felt good about it. I dusted myself off and focused on sharing my knowledge. It’s the doing that helps us get better.

What’s one thing you’d like to become better at? Share below… put it out there and then make it happen! We’re in it together.
