Shared Bedroom Nursery Inspiration

Happy 2015, all! I’m Sara from Our Family Roost, a blog where my husband Jordan and I chronicle life as it happens (and as we remember to blog about it!). I’m so excited to share with you a big piece of my design heart – a shared bedroom that I lovingly put together for my two sons, Lionel Conner (2.5 years old) and Quincy August (who joined our family in November 2014).

Since our home features two bedrooms upstairs and a third bedroom downstairs, Jordan and I wanted our children to share a bedroom for a few years in order to keep them close by us as they grow. I was confident that regardless of whether our second child was a boy or a girl, we could make a shared bedroom work, at least for a year or two (until privacy and/or modesty becomes an issue for kiddo(s) of different genders). But, when we learned that our babe on the way was another boy, it made the process of conceptualizing and executing a shared bedroom even easier, especially for the long-term.

I knew that I didn’t want the boys’ bedroom to take itself too seriously; I wanted the boys to feel comfortable jumping, wrestling and laughing together on Lionel’s “big boy bed” as they grow and play together. This image in my head, as well as my fascination with all things rustic and woodland-inspired, led me to focus the room’s design around the theme of “a woodland adventure.” To accomplish that idea, I mixed and matched different furniture finishes and textile prints for an eclectic, collected feel. I sought out whimsical artwork and treasures from many talented Etsy artists (and I DIYed a few of my own pieces), added some of the boys’ toys and books to a set of DIY shelves that flank the window, and hooked up with Tiny Prints to add some personalized touches to the room. I quickly became smitten with Tiny Prints’ monogram pillows, and I was so fortunate to feature the work of photographer Jesse Michener, who captured the view from Orcas Island off the coast of Washington state (a gorgeous island where I traveled in early 2014, newly pregnant with Quincy) to feature in one of Tiny Prints’ fantastic metal prints.

While sweet Quincy isn’t yet living in this room – he’s staying close by his mama in a Moses basket in our master bedroom – our bigger boy, Lionel, adores counting the triangles on the feature wall, asking for books from his shelves for us to read together, and finding his name on the Lionel train art pieces hanging above his bed. If you’re on the hunt for any items in the boys’ bedroom, I’ve included source information below. You can also find more information about the bedroom and about our little family on our blog or on social media; we’d love for you to drop by and say hello! Many thanks to Tiny Prints for their help in creating such a fun-loving space for the two little boys who have stolen my heart.
