Summer Mantel 2015

I always look forward to the changing seasons and to have an opportunity to change up the mantel in the kitchen/breakfast area. And as much as I love the thought of decorating the mantel, it's not always easy for me to find things in scale, that will provide impact when they are competing with a floor to ceiling stone fireplace. Remember this room use to be the family room.

I find what works best for my mantel is fewer items with height and grouped together, so things look in scale.

I recently got this art piece with colors that complement most of the areas around the kitchen and that I really like. I was also drawn to the piece because I think it has a simple coastal vibe going on. If it was framed (which I plan on doing) it could probably stand on it's own, but for now, I paired it with a few other things that I love with the canvas.

This particular orchid has been going strong for months now. I have a few others doing just as well. Honestly, I think Orchids look pretty grouped with anything, and this art piece is no exception.

I placed a shorter blue glass jar so it wouldn't compete against the height of the candle sticks. I painted the candlesticks a pretty blue and then edged the canvas in the same blue. I think the color is called Tidal water from SW.

The look is calming and peaceful to me, kinda what this summer has presented to us so far. And when things do get a little loud, out of control, someone spills fruit punch or ice cream on the carpet, I just look at the mantel as a reminder and the sweet expectation that these are the best days of our lives.

Happy Summer to you!
