This morning I stumbled upon a piece in the Washington Post called Men really need to stop calling women crazy. Summarized, the author speaks of how men are wrong to refer to a woman as ‘crazy’ when she’s acting emotional or in a way that inconveniences the man.
I agree with the author that it is controlling for a man to tell a woman not to act in a specific way – it downplays our emotions and restricts us to their point of view. But I don’t think that men are the only problem – since women refer to each other as crazy, or bitchy, or ugly just as often, if not more frequently.
We all need to stop the name calling.
I want to challenge myself to be more understanding and to squash that name-calling instinct. Let’s try to understand each other more instead of forcing our expectations on others.
