Traditional Dance Botswana

This photo is from back in September.

One lazy saturday morning after recuperating from PST sessions and a failed internet date at the local library, another volunteer and I went for a walk around Serowe and stumbled upon this traditional dance festival. Traditional dance in Botswana is so engaging to watch. It seriously gives me goosebumps!

We were so happy! I for one was surprised PC never planned any cultural outings for us during training.

So stumbling upon this festival was great! We took a seat among the locals on the sweltering hot pavement and unsuccessfully tried to shield ourselves from the burning sun rays as we enjoyed the performance.

It appeared as though the competitions was among local dance troupes in the area.

My favorite group reenacted a “hunting and gathering” scene that was very well choreographed!

The young man playing the goat or cow (not sure which animal) was delightfully expressive with his animal like movements.

I’ll see if I can fish up more pictures.

Take a closer look at the two above.

Notice the shells around their ankles and wooden staffs in their hands?

Yea it’s not just for decorative purposes.

They added musical flair to the performance which gave rhythm and bass to the singing and dancing.

Oh! I do have video! But my last video took 4.5 days to upload so….

Sorry for the photo quality but I didn’t have my camera and had to rely on my smart phone.

Do you enjoy attending cultural events?

Tell me about the last one you attended in the comments below!
