How to Make a Flower Lamp Shade With Fabric
Ready for spring, northern hemisphere-rs? Add a gorgeous tulip-shaped pendant lamp shade to your space and give your home a light and bright new feeling.
Supplies
- A pair of scissors
- Needle nose pliers
- Sponge
- Decoupage glue (or Mod Podge)
- 12 stems of aluminum wire
- Socket with a LED bulb
- 30cm (1/3 yard) of cotton fabric
- Pins
- Leaf template
- Hot glue gun
1. Make the Wire Petals
Step 1
Download and print the petal template.
Step 2
Place the template on your working surface and use the nose pliers to bend your wire into the shape of the petal. Make 10 wire petals.
Step 3
Twist the wire ends together.
2. Cut Out the Fabric
Step 1
Each individual petal will require two pieces of fabric, one for front and one for the back.
Fold and press the fabric in half, width-wise.
Step 2
Pin the template on to the folded piece of fabric.
Step 3
Cut out the petal with a 1.27cm (0.5in) seam allowance, so that the fabric covers the wire.
Step 4
Apply a thick layer of decoupage glue (or Mod Podge) to the back of both fabric petals.
Step 5
Place the wire between the two pieces of fabric (glue sides facing each other) and set to dry. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have 10 individual wired fabric petals.
Step 6
Bend and make a curve on each petal.
3. Assemble the Lamp
Step 1
Using your hot glue gun, add glue to a section on the socket.
Step 2
Attach a petal to the glued section on the socket.
Step 3
One by one, following the process described in Step 2, glue the next four petals to the socket.
Step 4
Now add the next layer of five petals around the socket, using your hot glue gun. Overlap the bottom edges of the petals.
4. Cover the Socket
Step 1
Cut a long strip of fabric about 30cm (12in) and fold it in half, width-wise.
Step 2
Using your hot glue gun, wrap the strip of fabric around the socket to cover the bottom of the petals.
Hang Your Flower Lamp Shade
Well done, you've completed your lamp shade and it's ready to hang. Spend some time adjusting the leaves and ensure they're overlapping. Your pendant should resemble a tulip shape.
This lamp shade design is so versatile. To change the look, simply replace the soft pastel fabric with your favourite pop of bright colour. You could also use felt or leather to create a unique lamp shade - perfect for autumn and winter.
