The 4 Trends To Look Out For This Winter

The air is getting crisper, the thermostats are dropping… Winter is finally here! And with it cosy fashion made for snuggling on Sundays.

I love winter. There, I’ve said it.

I know us Australians are supposed to worship, languidly, at the foot of the sun God, but I’ve always been happier in a big jumper, grasping a mug of tea as if my life depended on it.

Winter fashion is simply more exciting. You have coats and jackets, nubby cardigans with tortoise shell buttons, sweeping trousers and cute little ankle boots. If you’re lucky, you have scarves and beanies, big cosy wraps and things made out of tactile fabrics that demand to be stroked.

So what should you add to your wishlist this season?

1. A dressing gown coat

Think of this as the high fashion equivalent of nipping out to the corner store in your pyjamas. The dressing gown coat – or “robe,” as marie claire’s junior fashion editor Tara Morris calls it – is the number one outerwear trend of the season after gaining in popularity last year.

“They are so easy to whip on,” Morris explains, “and the tie waist helps you to create a figure, so that you don’t feel like you’re drowning in a coat.” Look for something slightly oversized and long to create a dramatic silhouette in rich jewel tones like forest green, burgundy and navy blue.

2. Plaids

Beloved of Blair Waldorf, plaids and checks are staging a serious comeback. Blame it on Christopher Bailey at Burberry, who dedicated his last runway show for the British brand to the iconic print, or blame it on the resurgence of everything ‘00s, but you’ll want to dig out some checks from the recesses of your wardrobe this season.

3. Dresses with boots

With Picnic at Hanging Rock returning to Foxtel’s Showcase, everyone seems to have gone mad for boots and dresses this season. It’s true, nothing grounds a floaty, floral number like a pair of worn-in ankle boots. Plus, it means that you don’t have to retire all your favourite summer dresses just because the weather has gotten colder, just make sure to seek out midi-length styles to make this styling combination sing.

4. Neutrals

Every season is a neutral season here at The UNDONE, but none more so than winter. It’s here, in the coldest months of the year, that you can revel in the simplest of colour palettes. Navy blue, charcoal grey and oatmeal beige are three of our favourite shades to wear on cool days, perhaps with a couple of jewel-toned accents thrown in for good measure.

As always, the same rules apply when buying neutral colours both in summer and in winter. Build your base wardrobe with the classic hues – trousers, sweaters and shirts – so that you can throw on a more colourful scarf or handbag as an accessory.
