Today's post 1960s Dresses – A Rainbow of 50 Dresses (Pictures) from Vintage Dancer.
A rainbow of 1960s dresses
1960s fashions were known for their bold, bright, clashing use of color. I can’t imagine what it must have been like to shop the sea of colors in the 1960s. My eyes would probably hurt. They do now, just looking at all of these photographs and advertisements of 1960s dresses. There was no color left out of the decade- although they favored some over others. Take a look with me this these rainbow of 1960s dresses:
Red was a very mod color. Especially when mixed with white in color blocking. Since it was also very popular in the 1950s it tended to drift over into an orange-red in the early years or a purple-red in the later 60s.

Christmas time was an exception for RED clothing
Orange was a favorite color of the 1960s. When pastels were in vogue a light sherbet orange was worn, while the mid 60s loved a saturated Tangerine orange. The end of the 1960s used an earthy burnt orange moving in the boho 70s.

Mixing orange, pink and yellow was a common color combination.
Yellow was another color where all shade were in style as some point during the 60s. Pastel yellow, sunshine yellow, and mustard made quite the statement.

Green wasn’t worn much in the 1950s which made it a perfect rebellion color in the 1960s. Olive green was a favorite for fall and emerald green was a classic for party dresses. Lime green was mixed with pinks or worn on its own too.

There were two shades of blue in the 1960s. Robin’s gee blue and teal blue. The lighter Robin’s egg was a staple in the spring and summer lines. It was also very popular for party dresses- a hint at “Cinderellas” gown. Even into the boho 70s it remained a favorite. Teal blue, however was still in vogue from the 1950s. While most other 50s colors dropped out of sight Teal blue raged on. It is one of my all time favorite colors. I am so glad its back in fashion this year too.

Purple is the one color which was hardly seen in the 1960s. It existed the most when the pastels were in favor in the early 60s but then it wasn’t seen again until the late 60s and 70s when a dark deep purple combined nicely with mustard yellow or lime green.

Pink, pink pink. Nothing says mid century fashion like pink! Pink polka dots, pink checks, pink stripes, pink plaid… pink everything. The 1960s loved pink just as much as the 1950s. Many of my vintage 1960s dresses are all pink- soft peachy pink to bright bubble gum pink.
