Just an Ordinary Monday: The Engagement

May 12, 2014 is a day I will remember for the rest of my life. We get asked all the time if there was a significance to that day, and the answer is no. It was a normal Monday and we both went to work. Nothing special about that day at all.

Mr. Sea Monkey works the major car race, so he was working practice for that, and I had been working at my school all day. I was exhausted and wanted nothing more than to laze around in my sweats and watch TV. I actually told him that.

When he finished up, he sent me the normal text about being on his way home, but mentioned going out to dinner. We aren’t very spontaneous, so this was weird, but I brushed it off and agreed to it.

The text that started it all. Excuse our weird talk. That’s just us being silly. /Personal photo

He got home and changed into some fancy clothes, because he had told me he was taking us to a fancy restaurant that I had never been to, but knew it was expensive.

While we were eating, engagements got brought up and I made an offhand comment about “maybe in 45 years,” and he was playing with my left finger and responded “or in maybe 45 minutes.” Again, weird, but I didn’t think anything of it.

Around 50 minutes later, as we were finishing up our plates and I was about to stand up, he started bringing up how it’s later than 45 minutes, but it was better late than never.

He then pulled out the ring box and walked around to my side of the table, got down on one knee, and asked some form of the question I have thought about since I was a young girl.

It was all a blur. I cried a lot, which is big, because I’m not an emotional girl. We left and I called my parents and my grandma. I’ve never been so happy in my life!

There was no photographer to capture the moment, no applause…there weren’t even witnesses, because he waited until our section cleared out. He knew I didn’t like attention on me. It was perfect.

I didn’t think it was ever going to happen, because he seemed to not be budging on waiting to pop the question. There had been several conversations about it, and I didn’t think I was being heard, but little did I know, he was planning this the whole time.

May 12, 2014 may have begun as an ordinary Monday, but I could never imagine it would change my life. I never thought it would be a day I would always remember.

Ask Mr. SM why he picked that day and he’ll tell you: “That was the day I had the ring in my hand. I picked it up from my mom and couldn’t wait any longer.”

The ring was way too big, but I wore it for a day anyway. / Personal photo

His mom is in the jewelry business, so she helped him find the ring. He picked it out himself. It was actually opposite of what I thought I wanted. I thought I hated round shaped rings and thick bands. Now I know I love them. I love it even more because he picked it all by himself.
