Pattern Insights - Twist Tee

The #PatternPuzzle was quite a hit with our Facebook fans on Saturday. In many ways a straightforward pattern that yields fab results. Use any loose-fit tee shirt pattern to make this fashion-forward Twist Tee.

Firstly our #PatternInsight for this simple pattern. Balance is especially important in loose fit garments where they hang mostly from the shoulders. If you have ever had that sensation where your top or dress constantly pulls backwards and you are forever adjusting it then it is likely the balance is out. The simple key to this balance is the back shoulder line. Note in the pattern plan below that this loose fit kimono block has a back shoulder line that is higher than the front shoulder line by minimum 1cm. So if you are using a favourite tee shirt pattern please lay the front on the back (CF & CB together) and check your shoulder line before pattern making.
The pattern plan below is very simple with a boat neckline and cap sleeve that runs into the side seam. Trace full patterns for the front and back separately in preparation for making the twist patterns.

If the twist is on the right shoulder then you will be placing the front and back right shoulder lines together. For the Single Twist turn the back around so the shoulders join and the pattern appears to be facing in the wrong direction. For the Double Twist put the right shoulders together wight he patterns facing in the same direction. If you have fabric that is good both sides the cutting instructions for the Single Twist are Cut 1 Only R.S.U. (right sides up). If however you have a light knit that is good on one side only you would Cut 1 Pair and self line the whole top to make sure the right side of the fabric shows front and back. The cutting instructions for the double Twist are Cut 1 Only R.S.U.

To make these styles the necklines and joined armholes need to be finished before the twist. Then twist the fabric joining the left side shoulder and finish the left side armhole and hem.
