Globe Telecom uncovers major cause of signal interference in Makati

Globe Telecom has uncovered another cause of cellular signal interference in Makati that adversely affects its services in the areas of Guadalupe all the way to Magallanes including the stretch of EDSA along these two areas.

Following months of monitoring by the company’s technical team, it was discovered that another source of interference, aside from illegal repeaters, are high-intensity radio frequency identification (RFID) system that have been sold to residential villages intended for security purposes.

RFID is a wireless non-contact use of radio-frequency electromagnetic fields to transfer data, for the purposes of automatically identifying and tracking tags attached to objects. The tags contain electronically stored information.

An interference scanning test conducted by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) confirmed that the RFID system sold to residential subdivisions in the area to monitor vehicles entering and leaving village premises, use frequencies outside of the NTC-allowed frequencies for RFID systems.

As the systems are operating outside of the NTC-allowed technical specifications frequency bands, they now become another source of a network interference affecting Globe subscribers residing and traversing in the area.

“It is unfortunate that a RFID system aimed at providing security in certain villages has been the cause of a major source of signal interference in the area. We would like to assure our subscribers that the company is doing everything within its reach to resolve the issue,” said Atty. Froilan Castelo, Globe head of Corporate Legal Services Division.

According to Castelo, Globe Telecom is now working closely with the NTC and homeowners’ association (HOA) representatives from these exclusive residential subdivisions notably Forbes Park, Dasmarinas Village, Urdaneta Village and Bel-Air, to resolve the issue at the soonest time possible.

Castelo emphasized that scanning tests will also be conducted in other exclusive villages to ascertain whether their respective RFID system also causes network interference that results in mobile phone subscribers to experience dropped calls, garbled lines, and weak signal.

He added Globe Telecom will continue to intensify its campaign against network interference to ensure subscribers are able to maximize the benefits of the company’s network modernization initiative.
