I'm 5'3" and Love Wearing These "Tall-Girl" Trends

I love wearing the things that everyone tells me not to wear. Okay, maybe not everyone, but I sincerely enjoy the feeling of having someone question what I'm wearing and assuring them that I think it looks cool and that's that. After all, they aren't the ones wearing the outfit—I am! Unfortunately, I deal with this kind of questioning a lot as a stereotypical short person, coming in hot at a solid 5'3". Whether it's a comment from my mother on how that dress "drowns me," or a friend letting me know that my shirt doesn't really "do" anything for my frame, I'm over going along with the status quo.

If you relate to me in any way, you're aware of the plethora of trends that have somehow been deemed specifically for "tall girls." While those trends look incredible on the long-legged women of the world, they can also look good on us shorties, too, and I'm here to tell you about a few that I wear on the regular. From floor-length robe coats to mid-calf boots—and don't you dare assume I wear heels every day—get ready to shop the six "tall-girl" trends I love wearing as a fully functioning short girl.

Some people may say that robe coats drown a small person like me—that they hide my shape and make me appear shorter because of how much of my body length they take up. I don't necessarily disagree with those statements, I just don't really care about them. I love robe coats because they make my many jean and T-shirt outfits 10x more interesting. Plus, they make for a great Instagram, and I'm not about to deny the importance of that.

Tall girls flock to flats while petite girls typically flee from them. Well, not this short girl. At this point in my life, there is no hiding the fact that I don't have legs that extend for miles, so instead of continuously paining myself with stiletto after stiletto, I find no shame in embracing a really cool pair of flats every once in a while. Right now, I am loving the festive variations of flat slides. From adornments like pom-poms to silk knots, this shoe style almost has me ready to ditch heels completely. Almost.

This particular large pant style is also one of those trends that can be considered "unflattering" to a smaller frame. While no one likes to hear that something is unflattering on their body, sometimes, it's actually true. But what do I do when I come across a really cool pair of pinstripe wide-leg pants that my closet is begging me to purchase? I buy them. And so should you. I say if you love something, wear it, and forget about the rest. If you style it in a way that wholeheartedly represents you, then no one can do anything except shower you in compliments, trust me.

Tall girls can easily get away with oversize items since they have more body to work with. That's just a fact. However, that doesn't mean us shorties can't wear an oversize piece or two as well. My go-to oversize items include baggy jeans and oversize reworked shirts. While this trend might be the one in the group that I actually look the most ridiculous in, the rebel in me is forced to love it more because of said ridiculousness. Like I said before if you wear it and own it, you're doing everything right.

Ankle boots can easily be worn by the tall and the small, but mid-calf boots are trickier to pull off when your legs are shorter than the average joe's. "Creating longer lines" is a rule fashion girls tend to abide by when aiming to achieve the most lengthening silhouette, so since this particular boot style cuts off the line of your leg, it can be considered something to steer clear of when you are on the petite side. But if you've learned anything from this story so far, it's that I like to push the boundaries and break people's expectations. I actually love wearing this boot style with midi dresses or skirts to really go against the status quo. And guess what? Never once have I heard that I look short while doing so.

This one is more run-of-the-mill, but I am including it because I hear a lot of short people claiming they can't wear midi dresses—only minidresses, and that is simply not true. This is pretty much the only dress length I wear whether it be in the office or on the weekend. Maxi dresses are welcome in the petite world as well. However, to avoid looking like you're wearing a sac, try to find dresses that cinch in at the waist or that have a unique neckline of some sort. Long story short, I think there is something romantic about a smaller woman owning her height and wearing the things she wants to wear.
