Sid Meier’s SNES dev console is up on eBay

If you grew up in the 80s or early 90s, the SNES is likely a very fond memory in your mind. Some of Nintendo’s best games came from the SNES era, including Donkey Kong Country, Super Metroid, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and more. These are all classics that older gamers will always recommend to a younger audience looking to see where games came from nearly 25 years ago.

Now you can own a piece of SNES history, if you have the cash to do so. An auction benefitting St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital has been placed on eBay for one Super NES Emulator SE. What’s that, you ask? It’s the development console Nintendo only released to licensed developers in order to produce games for the SNES. During the time of the SNES, Nintendo was was wary of letting just anyone have one of these units, so the were released only to those developers Nintendo trusted and were usually destroyed after they were no longer used.

The particular Super NES Emulator SE up for auction was used by Microprose, a company well known for its strategy games. Sid Meier led the company during this time and the development kit was used in-house for several Microprose projects. The bidding for the auction starts at $5,999.00 and currently has 0 bidders. If you don’t want to fight for the item, a buy it now price is offered at $9,500.00. So for around $10k, you could own a piece of Nintendo gaming history.
