Hot Summer Weekends: Keeping Your Beauty Cool at the Beach or in the City

We try to keep our beauty routines going in the summer, but heat and humidity conspire to destroy our efforts and leave us limp and bedraggled. Besides, we’re too busy planning our escapes to the beach to care, right? Well, there are a few things that we can try to keep our cool and look like we still have our beauty act together, whether at a sunny beach or in the hot city:

For the Beach:

J. F. Lazartigue Hair Masque with Shea Butter

A hair “masque”? That you leave in for at least two hours? That seems like an awfully high-maintenance endeavor, but there’s an easy way to add moisture to sun, wind, and salt water -dried hair. I tuck a tiny, TSA-type travel jar of this thick moisturizing treatment in my beach or pool bag, and work a dollop into my hair while I’m in the sun. That way, the heat and sun bakes moisture into my hair, not out of it. When I shampoo later, my hair is easy to manage, not dry and tangly. J. F. Blissoma Adaptive Energy Tonique

This isn’t you ordinary “refreshing” toner spray: Blissoma’s Adaptive Energy Tonique is formulated with herbal adaptagens holy basil and rhodiola, as well as skin-soothing extracts of oatstraw and calendula, to refresh and revitalize skin after a day in the sun. Blissoma Adaptive Energy Tonique, $25.99 at Blissoma.com.

Jane Iredale PureMoist Lipstick

After a day of sun, a face of makeup might be the last thing we want to do. And the golden glow of the beach might not look right with our ordinary colors, either. But there’s more to choose from than all or nothing – try a bronzey coral for an easy, slightly finished look for after-sun cocktails. Jane Iredale’s PureMoist lipstick in Lily is a sheer shimmery coral that looks good on most golden-toned skins. And since it’s made with food-grade ingredients, you won’t be secretly worrying about whether it’s bad for you. Jane Iredale PureMoist Lipstick. $25 at Nordstrom.com.

For the City:

Kenet MD EnGarde Moisture SPF 30

Just because you’re not at the beach doesn’t mean you don’t need sunscreen – and in the summer, it has to be stronger and more sweatproof besides. A non-greasy finish and high SPF are the deal-makers for me, and Kenet MD’s EnGarde Moisture with SPF 30 fit the bill nicely. It’s also fortified with vitamin C for antioxidant protection, and its light fragrance has me thinking maybe I’m on vacation, even when I’m not. Kenet MD EnGarde Moisture SPF 30, $25 at KenetMD.com.

Inglot Mattifying Pressed Powder

Inglot Mattifying Pressed Powder

Pretty much the biggest beauty annoyance in summer is the sweaty, greasy face that befalls anyone with even a slight tendency to shine. I’ve got combination skin that’s dryish in the winter, and nonstop “glowy” in the summer. I love my blotting papers, but that’s not enough. And powder seems to last about five minutes. But there’s a new professional makeup powder designed for performers who really heat up, whether they’re actors working under hot lights, or athletes who need to look cool while going through their moves for the camera. Inglot’s Mattifying Pressed Powder is silicone-based and chemically designed to absorb shine at a much greater rate than ordinary talc-based powders. Plus, it’s milled finely enough for a high-definition finish. Inglot Mattifying Pressed Powder, $21 at Inglot.

“Lale” by YS-UZAC

YS-UZAC Lale

Too hot for perfume? In many cases, yes – all of us have found our senses assaulted by a powerful fragrance amplified by the heat. But there are fragrances that keep their cool no matter how hot and humid it gets. A recent find is Lale, a soft and feminine fragrance featuring bergamot, saffron, and the Wintersweet, a tiny white flower that blooms only in snow in the Himalayas. That image alone is enough to make me feel cooler, but the unisex fragrance itself is subtle and not too sweet, with just enough leather and spice to keep it sensual. “Lale” by YS-UZAC, $170 at OsswaldNYC.
