A postcard from Dakhla

Oysters

I’ll admit, I’d not heard of Dakhla before I was invited there a couple of weeks ago to experience the city. I took a quick look on the map, spotting a small spit of land below Morocco, before replying with a yes. I don’t think there are many places on this planet that I’d turn down an opportunity to visit – I’m so intent on seeing as much of the world as I possibly can.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. When Pinterest didn’t turn up a wealth of sun-drenched images of beaches etc, I was stumped as to what to pack. Still, anywhere with a desert had to be hot, right?

Turns out, not so much at this time of year, but wind was certainly abundant (hence the hair situation above!). Which is handy, as Dakhla’s biggest draw for tourists is how great it is for kitesurfing. As I prefer to keep my feet on solid ground, I opted out of any watersports and explored the rest that the city had to offer.

It was clear that tourism in Dakhla is in it’s infancy, and whilst it has a little way to go (building works were underway as we walked through the vibrant city centre), the extremely welcoming locals, beautiful blue sea and miles of sand dunes make it a very promising destination indeed. Watch this space!

I took and edited more photos than I care to admit, but I hope you’ve managed to get an idea of what it’s like to spend a couple of days in Dakhla. More from the desert very soon! x
