Why Lupita Nyong’o Is So Important Right Now

Lupita Nyong'o, The Red Carpet Slayer
Hollywood’s new it-girl is a sculpted ebony statue of awesomeness and I am here for it.
I’m not sure when I first heard about Lupita Nyong’o but since that point my fangirling level has been turned up to 100. I’m hooked. If you don’t know who she is, I don’t think we can be friends. Not until you get yourself over to her IMDB page and get acquainted.

Lights, Camera, Lupita!
She’s not just a breath of fresh air to Hollywood, she’s a gale force wind just toppling everything in her path by the sheer power of her beauty and charm. She’s a force of nature.
Ok, let me stop. .
No I can’t.
I can’t because, we’re still at a point where women of colour, across a wide range of ethnic groups, struggle
to think of themselves as beautiful and worthy of praise based on impossible beauty standards.
I can’t stop because there are still people who believe that bleaching their skin is a way to make themselves more attractive. In fact, it does the opposite. Exhibit A:

Baseball's Sammy Sosa before and after skin bleaching

I can’t stop because women still feel pressure to dim their charm charisma and talent; to not shine too bright.

Here we have a young woman whose charm, elegance, intelligence and beauty is stunning an industry where
she is, believe it or not, a newcomer. An industry where women who look like her are normally overlooked.
All that and she’s only 30 years old.

I can’t wait to see what’s next for her. Hopefully there’s an Academy Award coming her way in February and many more great film roles to come.
