Holiday Gift Idea: Mantry Artisan Food Subscription Box

Sometimes I have a hard time thinking of good gift ideas for the men in my life- my brother, my dad, my fiancé.. I like to get unique gifts, making sure it’s something I know they will really appreciate and use!

I recently just learned about this interesting subscription box called Mantry. It’s a monthly box full of american artisan foods from around the country.

We got to try out the latest crate- Coffee & Smoke. All of the items fit the theme- smokey meats and bbq sauce, alongside espresso cookies and coffee syrup.

Everything is delivered in a crate with the Mantry logo on the side. Kinda cool and adds to the experience!

Here’s everything the crate included- Coffee and smoke themed products.

The coffee products:
Lark Fine Foods Espresso Chip Shortbread Cookies: Whole wheat shortbread with espresso and chocolate. These were DELICIOUS.
Granola Jones Mocha Haze: Coffee, cocoa, and roasted hazlenut granola.
Dave’s Coffee Coffee Syrup: A mix of cold brew coffee and sweeter. Mix with milk for a really delicious coffee drink.
Olive & Sinclair Buttermilk White Coffee Chocolate: Buttermilk white chocolate with espresso bits. This was an interesting bar- Paul liked it a lot but the buttermilk aspect was kind of a miss for me.

And the smoke side-

La Quercia Smoky Borsellino: cured ham. Paul liked this a lot!
Southern Soul Barbeque’s Sweet Georgia Soul BBQ Sauce: Smokey, sweet, and mustardy bbq sauce. Really tasty!

I love the idea of finding new products like this that you more than likely would have never heard of otherwise. I will definitely buy the Espresso Shortbread Cookies again, as well as the coffee syrup! Subscription boxes like this are always fun because you don’t know what you’re gonna get so it’s always a surprise, and it can really open your eyes to new things.

The one downside I have with this is the price- The Mantry runs for $75 (plus shipping!) per crate. I googled and added up the retail price for buying each of these items separately, and it was right around $50, so I was somewhat surprised at the price being so high.
I understand that they are sent out in handmade crates and that they need to make a profit, and that the items separately doesn’t include what it would cost to ship each one, but considering The Mantry most likely isn’t paying full price for these items (most likely getting a wholesale price) the markup just seems steep. Another surprising part was that even if you buy a 3 or 6 month subscription, you aren’t getting a price discount. A 6 month subscription comes to $450- but the upside is you don’t pay shipping (which at the one month price, would run you around $60.)

The good news is that if you are a first time buyer, you get $25 off your first crate. I think that at $50, this is an awesome gift for the foodie in your life. Paul was super, super excited about trying everything out (He had been asking when it would get here since I told him about the email I received!) So I definitely think it’s worth checking out at the $50 price.
