Almost all people in this world may have faced the inevitability of having scars. This results when the body produces collagen to reconstruct from where the skin has been damaged. Many people decide to wait until time hides the traces, but there are some who choose to seek dermatology services to immediately hide these marks. In order to find the right measure to treat them, these individuals should analyze the structures of scars.

Flat, pale
This type is the most common form of scars. They usually start in red or dark color and get paler and flatter as time passes by. The process may take up to two years to lighten and flatten.
These scars may be left alone if in a small size, however if they became widened or stretched, surgical reduction may help. Laser method may also help darken the scar to blend with the skin tone.

Keloids
This type of wound mark is characterized by overgrowth that results from the abundance of collagens. Keloids are usually raised above the skin surface, they overlap the actual wound size, shiny and hairless. The color varies from red to dark violet that gets paler in time. This scar may possess itchiness and burning sensations. Common areas to have this are on the sternum, deltoid and upper back of the ears.

There are wide options in treating keloids and hypertrophic scars. Options are and may not be limited to Cortisone injections, surgery, laser, silicon sheets, cryotherapy, interferon, Fluorouracil and radiation.

Hypertrophic
Hypertrophic wound marks are like keloids but they do not go beyond the actual size of the wound. This is due to the imbalanced distribution of collagen, and often results on a red raised scar that will go paler and flatter in five years or so.

Treatment the same as keloids.

Pitted or sunken
Also known as the “ice-pick” scars, they are the often outcomes of chicken pox and acnes. They appear to be deeper from the skin surface, this is because of the loss of the underlying fat beneath the wound site.

Pitted marks can be treated by collagen concentrated cream, laser resurfacing, dermabrassion, punch graft or punch excision.

Scar contractures
The primary causes of this scar are cases of higher degree burns. This result on a tightened skin that restricts movements for the person bearing this kind of wound marks.

The use of z-plasty, skin grafting and silicone gels are the primary treatment for contractures.

Stretch marks
Although most people think that this result from stretched skin, this often occurs due to hormonal issues. Pregnancy and hormonal imbalances are the primary causes of the zebra-like skin marks.

Increase in vitamin c intake, laser procedures, surgery, can help on minimizing the visibility.

Now that the types of scars are known, it will be a lot easier to choose among the scar treatments. Scar treatments are the means of lightening, flattening and making them invisible to the eyes in a matter faster than the normal process. However, before pressing on an option, scar bearer must always seek professional advice from the trusted doctors.
