DWNTWN (D\\\NT///N)

Eight months i’ve had DWNTWN at the top of my spotify.

Sure others have come along, stayed for a week, and then left just as easily.

But I can’t get over DWNTWN. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that this is a long-term kind of deal. And I challenge y’all not to fall as well.

I really have yet to find anything more captivating than the human spirit. And, oh what a spirit Jamie Leffler has.

An author has page after page, chapter upon chapter, to build a character that you can connect with, someone you root for. But songwriting is an art where you tell a story in a few lines, lay over a melody, and just hope it reaches others beyond those riffs.

Even now as I play

Missing You, I hear a story of real love, of real loss, and I’m torn between crying and dancing. Apparently, this is exactly what they’re going for, as Robert Cepeda recently told

ent scoop. Missing You is a love song from Jamie to her grandpa, whose heart was ‘warmer than the sun’, who ‘taught (her) how to love’.

There’s something worthwhile about listening to those whose sleeves are worn and tattered from the number of times they’ve sewn their hearts to it. Just listen to

Heroine, a song written about Leffler’s father who passed secondary to overdose, and try not to… feel (you monster. Just kidding). In this sweet song, Jamie talks about the ‘eyes of a lost soul’ and what could have been, how she ‘coulda been (his) heroine’, but she didn’t have the words then as she does now. How grateful I am for the words she now has, as we get to move to and be moved by her love in lyrical form.

Aside from my affection for soulful songwriting, it’s just simply too hard to not to be endeared by these humans. Fast forward in their feature from
