strike a cord

Marlien Rentmeester

Sun's out, swimsuits are on, and so are our cord pendant necklaces! Yes, it's that time of year to tie one on and layer it with sparkly, stay-on bling. Vogue concurs, BTW, endorsing ones in natural textures like rope, silk, or leather. My sister and I are wearing necklaces from Jenna Blake (I love this new bracelet!), but I also have a few silk cords ($35!) from Adina Reyter, below (last two pics), that I customize (sometimes daily) with different charms and LOVE these affordable, get-in-the-game options from Missoma, EliouRoxanne Assoulin, and Annika Inez.

heating up

In New York last week I celebrated the premiere of my father’s documentary at The Tribeca Film Festival with my family. I indulged in late-night pizza at Rubirosa and stayed out way past my bedtime at Zero Bond. Another highlight: I wore new summer dresses and skirts! After weeks and weeks of LA’s May Grey/June Gloom (read: sweater weather), I relished the sun on my skin–and breezing around in cool but also thoroughly unintimidating clothing. This particular outfit from ME + EM nails summer-in-the-city chic: the swingy linen skirt and tank top whisked me from lunch at The Chelsea Hotel to shopping in Soho, thenstraight onto an evening flight back to LA. You can find more summertime heroes at ME + EM right now, including this lace halter-neck dress, this broderie crop top and this denim swing mini

shop and drop

In between work meetings, movie premiere prep and tending to family in town, I literally had a New York minute to shop, but that didn't stop me from snapping up a few scores, including the Mango lace dress, below, the slinky Simkhai, above, and these mesh Reformation flats that--no- joke--stopped admirers in their sidewalk tracks. Almost bit the bullet on this Alaia-inspired Cos bag but decided to cool my jets. For now...

splendor in the grass

Of course, we can't live the resort-hopping life all the time, but at least we can look like we're ready to, right? I found some fodder for this future dream of mine with help from Johnny Was. The above floor-sweeping lace dress travels light and yields major head-turning mileage. Just FYI: it can also disguise anything, whether it be too much pasta the night before or a red-eye flight to The Hamptons--guilty on both counts in this pic! Plus, it comes with a slip, so you don't have to go see-through. And there's more: the lace blouse, below, this sleek crochet midi, this lace mini, this floral and feminine day to night dress, and this bold print tunic. Shop it all here!

summer babe

Aimee song maternity style

It's been a minute since I was last pregnant, but I don't ever recall looking this chic when I was 8 months along! Aimee Song's summer maternity style is appropriately easy and relaxed but it's still steeped in the type of glamour that intrigues her 7 million-plus Instagram following. To dress up a comfy, loose-fitting pair of drawstring pants, she adds feminine ruffles, naturally, in the form of a strapless Kijun top ($140).  For a day at the beach, she teams an ALIGNE maxi skirt with a reverse halterneck Toteme top. Long, one-and-done dresses are also prioritized, specifically ones that can be also worn postpartum, such as the white long-sleeved Nanushka and  the pointelle knit ba&sh.  Might I suggest this, this and this to add to her easy-going repertoire--and mine?

counter parts

"I forgot to tell you," my sister whispered into the phone the other day from a far-flung fashion shoot. "They used Cos' shoes and accessories the other day on set, all of which look like The Row." Without asking who exactly "they" were, I straight-lined to Cos' website. "I got the mesh flats," she continued. "They're amazing dupes." Then it was my turn to share what "they" are wearing these days and other great dupes I've seen lately: the denim-punctuating Madewell belt, below, that easily passes for Khaite, the stretchy Staud pull-on pants (extremely) reminiscent of  High Sport and the strapless Dolce & Gabanna-vibed dress by Seven Wonders. I am also loving brooches with board shorts from the boys department (I just snapped up these from Alex Mill), as in above.

djuna bel

As I was scanning the crowd last night at the Beverly Hills Hotel, feting Dior's poolside pop-up, I noticed a few style standouts: Sam Traina, Gia Coppola, Natalie Love, Kelly Sawyer, Lisa Eisner, Cleo Wade, Derek Blasberg among them... But missing was the LA stylist-Laurel-Canyon-cool girl quotient. The radiating and absurdly photogenic Angeleno who turns on the lights, if you know what I mean. Djuna Bel is one of those of those women. Her self-described style is "classic, nostalgic, semi-precious or loud and wild." And I'm obsessed with it all! Some of her looks here: the Joie dress, below, the Isabal Marant denim jacket (also in white!), and the Blaze Milano blazer! I don't know her personally, but we have a few mutual friends. Inspector Google informed me that she has roots in both Bali (where my Indonesian mother lived) and Holland (where my dad is from), so I also I feel a cultural kinship with her! And her Highland Park home is also incredibly beautiful, last pic. I can so see her in this Joie denim dress ($180!) and this Pucci mini!
