Oscar de la Renta: In Honor Of a Legend

The fashion industry lost one of its true legends yesterday when Oscar de la Renta—one of the most iconic designers of our time—passed away at 82. Born in the Dominican Republic, the “sultan of suave” became famous in the 1960s for dressing Jackie Kennedy, later dressing several other First Ladies, including Hillary Clinton and most recently Michelle Obama. “I cannot express the loss that so many across the fashion world and beyond have felt today,” says our Editor-in-Chief Rachel Zoe, who worked with the designer throughout her career. “Oscar was one of the most extraordinary talents of our time, with the most genuinely beautiful and kind soul I have ever seen. His passion and spirit for designing were incomparable, and I will love and miss him deeply forever. May he rest in peace.” Known for ultra-feminine silhouettes and gorgeous, ethereal designs, full of intricate details and stunning colors, de la Renta was one of the industry’s top designers for several decades, a difficult feat in the fickle fashion world. “He was a tremendous support to me when others weren’t and mentored me from the start of my career,” says Rachel. In his honor, we chose some of our favorite Rachel-styled Oscar de la Renta red-carpet moments.
