Too Busy Homeschooling? Don’t Forget the Fellowship of the Saints

Are you too wrapped up in ‘to-do’s’ that you forget to purposefully plan down time, specifically getting together with other families? I know it’s a mistake I make all too often. Maybe this sounds familiar to you too?

Today we said goodbye to a family who will soon be moving out of state. I like this family. Scratch that – my whole family likes this family. The parents have worked hard to instill Christ-like character into their children. But, when problems do occur they are quick to offer guidance and restoration. Those kind of families are not easy to find!

I enjoy this Mom’s company as well. We are both ‘seasoned’ homeschoolers and have lots to gab about. She’s always ready to offer a refreshing word of encouragement. Those kind of ladies are hard to find!

The sad part is that this isn’t the first time this has happened. Yet again I didn’t extend myself in an effort to go and just ‘hang out’ with these families – not realizing until they are gone cross country (or even out of the country) what treasurers they are. “Gee, I really enjoyed her company.” “Gee, our kids really got along well.” “Gee it’s a shame she’s so far away.” and so on.

So why is it that I get so ‘Lisa-centric”? Why am I unable or unwilling to step outside my goal-oriented world and call someone up just to get together? Many times I figure “so and so” is too busy to get together. Geez, we are all homeschoolers —– we are THE most flexible people in the world! But do we act accordingly?

The bible says not to forsake the fellowship of the Saints. I believe this pertains to more than Sunday. Finding like-minded people is a gift from the Lord as we are to encourage one another on this race.

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:24-25)

I’m taking my own advice and not letting another quality friendship slip through my fingers – and I encourage you to do the same!
