Hotel of the Month: Treehotel, Sweden

Nested near the remote Swedish village of Harads, this world-class collection of eco-luxe ‘treerooms’ has really stirred things up in the Far North. Usually reserved for the wish lists of children; Treehotel has redefined these bucolic lodgings as a viable, stylish and exclusive getaway.

Mirrorcube

Inspired by the film The Tree Lover by Jonas Selberg Augustsén and built by an elite group of architects and designers, including Tham and Videgaard Hansson, Sendell Sandberg, and Inredningsgruppen; the five pod-style rooms are hidden deep in an unspoilt forest, suspended surreally off the ground near the serene Lule river.

Scandi cool

Created to capture the imagination, each design is completely unique; either popping playfully from the natural landscape or hanging camouflaged amongst the branches. Blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings, the eco credentials of this unique destination are mind-blowing (the owners have thought of everything); expect eco-toilets that incinerate waste, an eco heated sauna and timber frames made from locally sourced and rescued wood.

The Blue Cone

Just south of the Arctic Circle, this is about as out in the sticks as it gets. Come rain or shine though, this rural compound is a sublime hide-out. While you’re not going to stumble upon a Starbucks around here, there are plenty of activities available if you’d like to do a little more than sleeping and stargazing, with kayaking, horse-riding and mountain-biking providing an idyllic way to pass the time in the warmer months and a host of snowy activities such as snow-showing, ice fishing or igloo biking on-hand in colder temperatures (just imagine the snug treehouses in a white winter setting).

The Bird’s Nest

When it comes to food; locally-sourced, wild ingredients are served up at the 1950s style Britta’s Pensionat, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can even have dinner served in your treehouse. In the evenings, the world’s first treehouse spa – a delightful pine retreat amongst the trees – is the perfect spot to relax, unwind and limber up for a day of activities.

The UFO

Perfecting the tricky blend of playful luxury, the imaginative Treehotel succeeds in stirring up and satisfying childhood fantasies. The toy-like Blue Cone peeps poster-paint red over a wooden platform, but inside, it’s a dream of grown-up Scandi decor with muted grey hues, soft furs and custom-made furnishings. The hardly visible Mirrorcube is a light-filled, minimalist box with a ladder that leads to a roof terrace – somewhere to lay on your back and peer through the pines and, if you’re lucky, catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. With the emphasis on the great outdoors, the compact interiors are uncluttered and low on technology. This is not somewhere to bring your Homeland box set, but a place to swing your legs from and breathe in a lungful of invigorating Nordic fresh air.
