crochet pinning : monochrome

Hello my blog buddies and happy, happy Friday! Today I'm going monochrome with lots of black, white and neutral crochet inspiration picks. It's not a common theme in my crochet or even around this blog as you know, but it is something I've been thinking about a lot lately and something I'm finding inspiring for a couple of reasons...

The black and white 'Scandi' theme is huge right now and has been for a while and I am sure it will be for a long, long time to come too since it is such a modern classic. And while I would love to live with but just can't because it is a little too austere for my more Scandi Boho / bit-of-a-hoarder style it does have some interesting lessons to teach and ideas to inspire us...

Obviously the main one is the use of 'white space' which we all know about and which I love because it is such a good way to make the most of pops of beautiful colour. Another idea, and the one I am really interested in at the moment, is how stripping out the colour can make you approach things a little differently and maybe force you to think more in depth about the project in hand. Whether your thinking about how to decorate a room or an art project, planning a quilt layout or considering ideas for new crochet designs it makes you think a little more in depth about pattern, contrast, shape, form and texture. When colour isn't in play (only tonal and monochromatic variations of black and white) how do you create visual and sensory interest? I know these concepts aren't new (so far from it in fact!) but as someone who thinks in colour (a lot!) it feels really refreshing and inspiring, almost liberating!

These are just a few of the crochet finds that have caught my eye lately for these very reasons. I've already added Daina Taimina's book 'Crocheting Adventures with Hyperbolic Planes' to my wish list, the book that inspired Gabriele Meyer's amazing collection of crochet sculptures 'hyperbolic surfaces' and I'm feeling so inspired by bobbly popcorn stitches today!
