T-Shirt Sew Along: Cutting the Fabric

Deel 2 van de T-Shirt Sew Along! Hoe je een basis naaipatroon voor je T-Shirt tekent zag je HIER. Vandaag gaan we de stof knippen.
Part 2 of the T-Shirt Sew Along! You could see how to make the basic T-Shirt sewing pattern over HERE. Today we will be cutting the fabric.

Wat heb je nodig - What you'll need
• Het naaipatroon • Stof (tricot/ jersey - aan 1 meter voor een volwassene heb je genoeg, voor kinderen kan het met minder stof) • Eventueel contrasterend tricot voor mouwen en/ of boordjes • Strijkplank & strijkijzer, liniaal, meetlint, potlood, stofschaar
• The sewing pattern • Fabric (tricot/ jersey - 1 meter for an adult T-Shirt will be enough, for a kids shirt you can use less fabric) • Optional: contrasting fabric for the sleeves and/ or the cuffs and collar • Ironing board & iron, ruler, tape measure, pencil, fabric scissors

Step-by-step
Vouw de twee zijkanten van de stof naar het midden toe, met de goede kant van de stof naar binnen. Links en rechts ontstaat er zo een stofvouw. Leg de (dubbelgevouwen) patronen voor het voor- en het achterpand links en rechts tegen deze stofvouwen aan. Teken een naadwaarde van 1 cm rondom de patroondelen. Werk je het T-Shirt niet af met een boord aan de onderkant, teken dan 2 cm naadwaarde aan de onderkant van de patroondelen. Knip de stofdelen uit.
Fold the sides of the fabric towards the middle, so the good side of the fabric lies on the inside. When you do this, there will be a fold on the left and the right side of the fabric. Place the (folded) pattern pieces of the front and the back of the shirt against the left and the right fabric folds. Draw a 1 cm seam allowance around the pattern pieces. If you are not going to finish the bottom of the shirt with a contrasting cuff, you'll have to draw a 2 cm seam allowance at the bottom of the pattern pieces. Cut the fabric.

Vouw een stuk stof dubbel (dezelfde stof of een andere kleur) en leg het patroondeel voor de mouwen erop. Teken er 1 cm naadwaarde omheen, knip de stof uit: je hebt nu twee mouwen.
Take a folded piece of fabric (the same fabric, or another color). Place the pattern piece for the sleeves on top of it, draw a 1 cm seam allowance around the pattern piece. Cut the fabric, you will have two sleeves.

Knip een stuk (contrasterende) stof voor de halsboord. Bereken eerst hoe lang de boord moet worden: • Meet met een meetlint op het naaipatroon hoe lang de ronding van de hals van het voorpand en van het achterpand is, tel dit bij elkaar op. • Vermenigvuldig dit getal met 0,85 (rond het af tot een rond getal) en tel er 2 cm bij op • Knip een strook stof met deze lengte en een breedte van 4 cm
Cut a strip of (contrasting) fabric for the collar. Calculate how long the fabric has to be: • Measure the length of the front and back neckline on your pattern pieces, add these numbers • Multiply this number by 0,85 (round it off) and add 2 cm • Cut a strip of fabric with this length and with a width of 4 cm

Wil je ook (contrasterende) boordjes aan de mouwen of onderaan het shirt, dan bereken je de lengte van de stroken stof die je nodig hebt op dezelfde manier als hierboven beschreven. Dit zijn al je stofdelen! Wil je het T-Shirt nog voorzien van een applicatie van stof of flockfolie, of een opdruk met textielverf, dan is het het handigst om dit te doen voordat je begint met naaien.
If you want to sew (contrasting) cuffs on the end of the sleeves or at the bottom of the shirt, you can calculate the length of the fabric strips you need in the same way as described above. These are all your fabric pieces! If you want to, you can add an appliqué or embellish the shirt with textile paint now before you're going to sew the fabric pieces together.

De stoffen zijn geknipt en liggen helemaal klaar om aan de slag te gaan! Morgen beginnen we met het in elkaar naaien van het T-Shirt.
