What Mother’s Day Means To Me

If there is one thing that becoming a mother teaches you, it’s how much your own mother loves you. There is simply no other kind of love like it and no other way to feel it than to live it…..to experience it for yourself. It’s not a love that builds slowly over time or one that needs to be worked on. It flows freely, it rushes through your veins and fills your heart to bursting point from the very second your child is born. It is instantaneous. It is everlasting. It is unconditional.

Motherhood brings with it a rollercoaster of emotions, sleepless nights, tantrums and tears. It is tough and it is hard work but it is also more rewarding and fulfilling than you could ever imagine. And, there’s no doubt in my mind that it’s worth every minute.

For me, Mother’s Day isn’t about flowers, gifts or chocolates. It isn’t about being given a lie-in or breakfast in bed. It isn’t even about the handmade cards from my boys (although i treasure them dearly). It’s about taking the time to sit and reflect on all the amazing moments, memories and feelings i’ve experienced so far as a mother.

It’s Riley coming up to me for no reason at all other than to kiss my face and tell me that he loves me.

It’s Harry waking up every morning with bright eyes and full of smiles.

It’s watching a blossoming relationship develop between my sons and seeing how affectionate they are towards one another.

It’s the sheer joy and pride i feel when they reach a milestone or learn something new.

It’s the look of excitement on Riley’s face when his favourite TV programme comes on.

It’s the way Harry’s face lights up when he hears my voice or sees me enter a room.

It’s how Riley starts singing and dancing like crazy whenever music comes on.

It’s Riley picking me flowers from the garden.

It’s how bath-time is more about blowing bubbles and splashing water everywhere than it is about getting clean.

It’s sneaking up to the boys at night to watch them sleeping and listen to them breathing.

It’s when i yawn , and Riley says ‘Mummy tired?’ ‘Mummy bed?’

It’s how Riley tries to comfort Harry when he’s crying and upset.

It’s my big boy standing in front of the mirror to brush his hair because he wants to do the same as mummy.

It’s my little cub burying his head in my chest to sleep.

It’s the look of concentration on Riley’s face when he’s drawing.

It’s the way Riley snorts whenever someone says ‘Peppa Pig’ and ‘Baas’ whenever he hears Timmy Time.

It’s how Harry becomes relaxed and content when i sing a lullaby to him.

It’s experiencing a million little moments and realising they’re actually the BIG moments.

It’s discovering a you that you never knew existed.

It’s knowing that you are loved each and every day.

It’s a dream.

It’s a blessing.

It’s a honour.

It’s understanding that Mother’s Day is actually EVERY day.
