Five Minute Friday: See

I’m linking up with Lisa Jo Baker today for Five Minute Friday. The rules are: write for 5 minutes flat on a given prompt-no editing or backtracking. Then Link up with Lisa Jo. Then, most importantly, visit and encourage the other bloggers who are participating in Five Minute Friday. Today’s prompt is SEE.

GO!

My dearest children~ I look at you every day, but I don’t always see you. I don’t see how much you’ve grown until you pants are too short or your shoes are too tight. I don’t see the way your eyes change from blue to green to hazel depending on the day. I don’t see the way you struggle to get through your reading assignments and how hard you are trying until your frustration finally gets the best of you. I don’t see your generous spirit, even after you share your last piece of gum with your sister. And, my beautiful children, I know that you don’t always see me either, just as I couldn’t really see my mother when I was a child. I am simply Mom. Your cheerleader, your cook, and your driver. I am the woman who nags you to get your homework done, who asks you twenty questions about your day at school, and who sometimes forgets which one of you likes the strawberry yogurt.

But then, every once in a while, I look at you while you are sleeping and see you…really see you. I take the time to pause and see the beauty of each of your faces. Sometimes, I take the time to watch you when you don’t know I’m watching you. And I see how kind you are, how generous you are, and how loving you are. And in those moments, my heart grows bigger and is filled with joy. And, every so often, you really see me too. You give me a hug when I’m having a rough day, you ask me questions about my life before you, and you tell me I’m pretty first thing in the morning when I’m wearing my pajamas and glasses. And in those moments, I can see love.
