BEAUTY | Nude Lipstick for Dark Lips

I love a good nude lip, and I’ve been trying to perfect the look for YEARS. Like many other black/brown women, my lips are pretty dark, and wearing a nude lipstick or lipgloss on darker lips can be tricky because the color of our lips can show through.

So after years of practice and mistakes and failures, I’ve learned a few for getting a good nude lip, and I’m sharing them with you! Just remember that these nudes complement my specific skin tone, so you may need to wear darker or lighter shades depending on your complexion.

Matte Finish // I use lip pencils (by themselves, with nothing on top) to get a nice, matte finnish. I use MAC’s Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in “Nice n Spicy,” and I also use a Mineral Lip Liner by elf Cosmetics (my color is “Rose”). After lots of trial and error, I’ve discovered that these liners work best for me, so I have to have them on hand at ALL TIMES. They give a matte look when I wear them alone, and I use them underneath my lipsticks and glosses every time I want to wear a nude lip.

Creamy Finish // My everyday nude lip is a creamy combination of my elf Cosmetics lip liner with Revlon’s Colorburst Lip Butter in “Pink Truffle.” The liner and the lip butter are essentially the same color; the lip butter gives me that creamy finish and added staying power, so the look lasts throughout the workday. This is my pinky-nude look, so when I want a nude that’s creamy, but more peach than pink, I use my MAC lip pencil with “Shy Girl,” a MAC lipstick. For a really beige nude, I use my MAC lip pencil with my Proenza Schouler x MAC lipstick in “Woodrose.” It’s very beige, so I can only wear it when my complexion isn’t too tan.

Glossy Finish // My favorite nude gloss is Maybelline’s Color Elixir Lip Lacquer in “Nude Illusion.” I can’t wear it alone (my lips show through), so I always pair it with my elf Cosmetics lip liner. The result is absolute perfection! I wear this glossy look when I go out at nights and have on really heavy eye makeup. I used to use a MAC gloss a few years ago (I think it was a Plushglass?), but for the life of me, I can’t can’t remember what it was called, so this Maybelline gloss has been super clutch!

This is what works for me. What doesn’t work? Using concealer on my lips before putting on lipstick or gloss. I’ve seen people do it, but it never works out well for my lips! Also, I always exfoliate my lips if I’m going nude…I’ve noticed that nude color seems to exaggerate the look of chapped lips.

I hope that was helpful! If you use another nude lipstick for dark lips, please share in the comments!

XO
