How To Wear: Black Lipstick

Black Kohl Pencil in Black Ice - Mac - £16.50
I've often said that I genuinely have no idea what my style is, and it's definitely true.

Some days I want to wear flowly chiffon floral skirts and leather waistcoats and fur gilets and dance in the sunshine and long grass, and other days I want to wear thick black eyeliner and blood red lipstick, dressed in nothing but monochrome and chunky black platform boots.
It's either super girly hippie or super hardcore and nothing in between, so it kind makes it hard to say what kind of 'style' I have, if any. So, I've figured the way to find out is to experiment, try a little bit of everything until I find what's for me.
My first daring venture has been to try the black matte lipstick trend.
I picked up this pencil (which is actually an eyeliner!) at the airport about a month ago, whilst also grabbing a charming little coral pencil (of course, for the lady side of me) and this is the first time I've tried it.
As it's obviously a very bold statement, I initially went for a very understated eye - no mascara or liner, simply a smudge of dark beige - but I found this actually looked TOO bare between my thick brows and dark lips, so I added a small smudge of dark grey and a tiny touch of mascara and found it looked much more even. Still quite understated (compared to what I'm used too) but not lost in amongst the boldness either.

The look certainly took some getting used to, and I found that it actually changed the shape of my face a little. Definitely not a look for the faint-hearted!
After a few snaps however, I found that there was a very clear definitive line on the inside of lip, where the liner stopped and you could just see the bare pink of my lip. (see below)

No matter how much pencil I applied it just wouldn't stick, so in the end I dabbed on a tiny bit of cream-textured lipbalm over the top and rubbed my lips together, to reach all the places the liner could not, and that definitely did the trick.
It kind of removed the whole matte-look effect but I found I actually preferred it.
The pure matte was really harsh on my face, and adding the texture of the balm made it soft and creamy, without being shiny (which I HATE).

Overall, I was wary when I first applied it, but once I evened out the eye makeup and dabbed a bit of cream balm over the top, I definitely enjoyed the look a lot more.

I think there's a very slim line here between looking ultra high-fash badass and 14 year-old wannabe emo, and I'm not sure how confident I'd be to wear this out in public just yet, but I reckon soon I'm just gonna say screw it and give it a shot.
Besides, anything looks good as long as you wear it with confidence right?
