My dad always carried a camera under the seat of his car and was constantly taking pictures. I think that his example, together with pouring over National Geographic magazines as a child fuelled my curiosity for the world around me. Although I worked in the field of photography for over 20 years, it wasn’t until very recently in 2010 that I bought myself a secondhand professional camera and started experimenting with street photography. I shot over 50,000 images that first year and gradually began to improve.

Photographers I admire are Vivian Maier, Robert Frank, Steve McCurry and Edward Steichen to name but a few amongst the many incredibly talented people over the last century.

Street photography is my true passion. Having a slightly off-kilter sense of humour helps keep me looking for the unusual.”

Reviewing a photography book is new to me. I looked upon it as a memoir in picture form and I was excited to be a part of this tour.

I’ve never been to Montreal and I found the author’s photos intriguing. I have always been a fan of black and white photos and the mystery that seems to envelope them. I was not disappointed in the photographer’s work. There were also beautiful color photos in the book that lent themselves to a different part of Montreal.

I also liked that the author didn’t do a touristy book. She did a story in pictures of Montreal as it lives and breathes and that was refreshing. The photographer took pictures of things that I take pictures of. She captured the crazy. She captured compassion. She captured the fun of young children. She captured nature. Two of my most favorite photos in the book were two taken on snowy days; one of a long staircase with snow on the side, and the other a snow-in street. I loved those two.

I enjoyed this beautiful book and I think any lover of picture books would love to have this sitting on their coffee table to pick up and browse through. I am giving Montreal: Street Photography by Debra Schoenberger five stars.
