book review: Modern Quilt Perspectives

there simply aren’t enough words to tell you how excited I am to be sharing Modern Quilt Perspectives: 12 Patterns for Meaningful Quilts

(affiliate link) with you today!!

it truly fills me with happiness to know that this thoughtful and inspiring book is available for everyone to read and see and enjoy. it is a must-have book for any maker’s bookshelf… in our house, we might already have a few copies. and a few planned for gifts as well ;)

Thomas asked me early last year to piece Ampersand, and I am incredibly proud of this quilt.

at times, I thought that these 900 tiny squares had risen from hell for the sole purpose of torturing me, but once they were all stitched together and I saw Thomas’s vision realized, it became a quilt that really inspired how I think about quilting and the way that things go together, not only in quilting but in all making.

from the book: ”{This quilt} is a balancing act of possibility and expectation…. Ampersand is a quilt of two stories: one that creates itself out of the endless details, the other formed of the vast totality. The perpetual question is, which story are you in?”

here is the pieced quilt before it was sent off to the super amazing Lisa Sipes for quilting.

I first met Thomas in person at Sewing Summit in 2012, where I got to hear him speak about his approach to fabric design. in all honesty, it was an experience that has shaped my journey and my making ever since. there were points in his talk where I felt so inspired that someone else in this crazy quilting world looked at things in a way I could really relate to, that I teared up. that’s right, damn you Thomas. I finally confess to the internets-at-large, and to you, that you made me cry tears of inspiration.

in the time since we first met, I have found that Thomas can always be counted on to break things down into the parts I need to see, to look at things with a twist I hadn’t considered, to inspire me (and those around him) to MAKE. he is someone that this creative community is lucky to have as a member, and that I am lucky to call a friend.

plus, because of him, I got to make this kick-ass quilt!
