knitting: cabled knit hat tutorial

I’m excited to share my Cabled Knit Hat with you, so let’s get started!
Materials needed:
DK weight/light worsted yarn (shown is Tosh DK by Madelinetosh)
4.25mm (size 6) circular needle
set of 4.25mm (size 6) double pointed needles
cable needle
large button (button shown from 2 Good Claymates)
Abbreviations:
C3f= put next 3 stitches onto cable needle and hold to front of work
C3b= put next 3 stitches onto cable needle and hold to back of work
pm= place marker
Cable Band:
Using dbl point needles, cast on 23 stitches.
Row 1 : k5, p2, k9, p2, k5
Row 2: k7, p9, k7
Row 3: k5, p2, C3f, k3, k3 from cable needle, k3, p2, k5
Row 4: k7, p9, k7
Row 5: k5, p2, k9, p2, k5
Row 6: k7, p9, k7
Row 7: k5, p2, k3, C3b, k3, k3 from cable needle, p2, k5
Row 8: k7, p9, k7
These 8 rows form pattern. Continue in pattern as established until you reach a length equal to head circumference plus 1″. (If you’re not able to measure the head in question, this size chart from Knit Picks may come in handy. I knit to 22″ in the hat shown.)
Cast off, but don’t cut yarn.
Hat Body:
Form the band into a circle, overlapping ends by 1″, and pin in place.
Using circular needle, pick up and knit 108 stitches (more if you can) and pm.
Knit in the round until work measures 8 inches from edge.
Crown Shaping:
Row 1: k10, pm. Repeat to end of round. If you have stitches left over just include them in the last set.
Row 2: knit to 2 stitches before marker, knit 2 together. Repeat to end of round.
Row 3: knit. Change to dbl point when work gets too tight
Repeat rows 2&3 until you are down to around 25 stitches. You don’t want to knit to a point, but rather to a blunt end.
Sew button where cable band overlaps, and you’re done. Wear (or gift) your lovely hat with pride!
