DIY: “bring the thunder” graphic tee

recently I’ve been having a great time on instagram chatting about two of my passions, sewing and biking. some friends and I decided to share our #sewbiking tutorials and projects today, and we invite you to follow us here on pinterest and on instagram with hashtag #sewbiking. and so the “bring the thunder” graphic tee was created!!

“bring the thunder?” well, let me tell you how that came about. when I first started riding, I expressed concern that I would end up with giant thighs. a certain husband that I love dearly responded with, “well, I hate to tell you this dear….” to which I responded “oh, yeah” because, my friends, I don’t exactly have willowy thighs. and you know what I realized? good for me! you have willowy thighs? good for you! (though this shirt might not quite be right for you, sorry.) you have thunder thighs? good for you! I say let’s all celebrate what we have, amiright? big, small, tall, short, whatever you may be… give yourself a big ol’ hug for being you!

for me, riding and strengthening my legs (and the rest of me too) has made me feel strong and proud and dammit, I have earned every inch of these thunder thighs. so I say bring it! I am bringing the thunder, my friends!! and today I’ll show you how you can too!

I would be remiss to not send out a big thank you to the lovely Mollie of wild olive for providing the perfect thunderbolt graphic! mwah :) you can find more of her fantastic goodies right here, embroidery patterns and kits and super cute printables too.

supplies:

t-shirt or fabric
Lumi inkodye® supplies

Pellon® Stick-N-Tear Embroidery Stabilizer

piece of clear glass
masking or painter’s tape
sharpie (or other permanent black marker)
black construction paper
scotch tape
embroidery supplies OR fabric markers

instructions:

1. click here to download the “bring the thunder” graphics.

2. either print the graphic onto lumi negative (following instructions here) OR use sharpie to trace text onto lumifilm/cut thunderbolt shape out of construction paper.

3. mark area to paint with masking tape on front side of shirt, and adhere Pellon® interfacing to wrong side of shirt covering the same area. (this will keep the fabric from distorting when applying paint)

4. apply paint per manufacturer’s instructions.

5. place negative over painted area and place piece over glass over negative (optional, but this will create a crisper image).

6. expose paint and then wash per manufacturer’s instructions (after removing tape and interfacing).

7. after shirt has dried, adhere another piece of interfacing to wrong side of shirt and place in embroidery hoop.

8. draw in lines and text with fabric markers – I used Pebeo Setaskrib Fabric Markers

{affiliate link} – or embroider lines with a simple backstitch.

9. wear and enjoy!
