I had so. much. fun. coming up with the look for today’s makeup tutorial! You can ask my husband, I was getting all sortsa giddy and stuff as I was testing it out. Sure, it’s a pretty simple, basic, “classic / retro” look, but I don’t know why… I just had FUN!
I went and picked up the new Rimmel London Retro Glam mascara and Stay Matte foundation from Walmart… FYI: back in November I was using the color “light ivory” in the foundation, but I switched to “ivory” – it matches my skin tone better now that I’m getting some sun! Also, all the products used in this tutorial are Rimmel and can be found at Walmart, I just happened to already own all of the other products used! I LOVE Rimmel makeup!
It’s no secret that I am an Audrey Hepburn fan. Audrey has been my style icon since I was a little girl – I even named my DOG after her. Sad, I know. Anyway, when I was trying to think of a style icon to give me some “Retro Glam” inspiration, Audrey immediately came to mind.
This was the image of her that I decided to use for my inspiration:
Here are the products that I used for this look:
Now, for the tutorial, we’re switching it up and instead of doing my usual video tutorial… we’re doing this thing in ANIMATED GIFS. Oh. Yes. We. Are.
Let’s get started, shall we? Also, get used to seeing my face REAL close up, y’all.
To start off, I primed my face using the Rimmel London Stay Matte Primer. Just rub that stuff all over your face… this creates a great “base” for your look.
Next is the eyes. I always do my eyeshadow before my foundation so that in case there’s any fallout you can do a good cleanup!
I primed my eyelids using the Rimmel London Scandal Eyes Eyeshadow Stick in Bulletproof Beige. Just glide this stuff all over your eyelid and spread it out with your fingertip.
For the eyeshadows, I first took the LIGHTEST shade in the Brick Lane Glam Eyes palette and placed that all over my lid. Audrey’s look is a fairly neutral eye, so I wanted that lightest shade to stand out.
NEXT, take the shade #2 (the second lightest shade) and place that JUST in the center of your eyelid.
Then, with a fluffy crease brush, glide color #3 (the third darkest shade) in the crease, focusing it MOSTLY on the outer edge of the eyelid.
Next, for eyeliner, I took the waterproof kohl eyeliner in black and lined both my waterline and tight line. I then also took the eyeliner on the top of my lid to create a solid line and a slight winged eyeliner look. PRO TIP: If you mess up your winged eyeliner or if it’s too thick or whathaveyou, take a makeup wipe and fix it with your finger. When I first did the wing on my eyes for this look, I didn’t like it, so I went in and made it smaller and liked it much better after that.
Audrey’s eyes in her look have BOLD smokey eyeliner, so I wanted to really play this part up!
Then, with a pencil brush, I took the darkest brown color (#5) in the palette and ran the color OVERTOP of the eyeliner and then smoked it out in the outer corner. I also ran the color lightly underneath my bottom lashes to smoke out the bottom lash line as well.
Afterwards, I reapplied a little of the lightest eyeshadow color to cover up some of what I’d messed up when putting on the eyeliner.
Foundation TIME!
I took a dollop on a clean makeup sponge and then just blended away (you REALLY do not need a lot… a little bit goes A LONG way with this foundation). I love the matte finish of this foundation because I don’t have to set it with a powder or anything… I can just wear it by itself.
This foundation gives awesome coverage and really evens out the redness of my skin tone.
Here’s a before and after just to show you the HUGE difference it makes:
Next is the EYEBROWS.
Audrey has REALLY bold eyebrows in her look, so I wanted to darken mine up when filling them in. I took the DARKEST brown shade #5 in the eyeshadow palette and with an eyebrow brush just filled in my brows making sure they were BOLD.
Filling in your eyebrows makes a HUGE difference in your face.
Here’s a before and after of my eyebrows just to show you:
For the CHEEKS, I wanted to keep them VERY light and neutral because Audrey’s cheeks are, well, very light and neutral in her look.
I used the Apricot Glow “Stay Blushed” liquid cheek tint, just placed a very small amount on my hand, and with a small stippling brush, just lightly stippled the color onto the apples of my cheeks and blended it out.
Mascara is my FAVORITE part of any makeup look.
A little makeup tip (and maybe y’all already knew this, but I only RECENTLY started doing it and it makes a HUGE difference in the application of my mascara): I run the mascara on the TOP of my top eyelashes before I apply it underneath my top lashes, if that makes sense. So, I make sure that I REALLY coat the top of my lashes… and it makes the application of the mascara underneath go on so much smoother and the mascara looks that much more bold.
The Retro Glam mascara has a funky “pear shaped” wand that really gets into the little crevices of your eyelashes. I love it.
Here’s the before and after (and creepy closeup of my eyes!!) of the mascara:
Now, Audrey’s lips are SUPER nude, but almost like a pinky-nude in her look… I went more “skin tone nude,” but that’s because that color just suits me better. You could go for a more white pinky nude if you wanted to!
I used the Moisture Renew lipstick in Nude Delight and the Stay Glossy gloss in Unlimited Gold.
And here is the finished look!!
What do you think? Did I capture the “Retro Glam” of Audrey? Certainly I am NO Audrey Hepburn, but you catch my drift. :)
