Bella Freud Parfum

A few weeks ago, teasers trickled in of a new fragrance collection created by Bella Freud and inspired by her signature logo jumpers; Je t’aime Jane, Ginsberg is God and 1970. Bella Freud Parfum is an independent company which sees Bella’s fashion nous paired with renowned ‘nose’, Azzi Glasser, who has worked on scents for Agent Provocateur and Illamasqua amongst others. If the fragrance names seem familiar, it’s because there has been a Bella Freud candle collection available at SpaceNK for a couple of years, housed in covetable black matt votives.

1970 is described as the hedonist; a punchy combination of Rose de Mai, saffron, frankincense, myrhh and benzoin with blonde woods. Je t’aime Jane is the most feminine of the trio; a romantic floral with Jasmine Night Flower, ylang ylang and orange blossom on a base of black oud, sandalwood and powder musk. But it seems easiest to talk in any depth about the fragrance that really caught my eye…and nose.

I’ve had a soft spot for Allen Ginsberg since I was at school (useless Lips So Facto fact #43: I had a little grey hamster called Ginsberg when I was at university), so the idea of a fragrance inspired by the poet writing, surrounded by books and windows thrown open, was particularly appealing. If you know anything about Ginsberg you’ll be pleased to know Azzi created something of a ‘clean’ interpretation.

Unlike the candle, if there’s any fig in Ginsberg is God the parfum it’s imperceptible. In its place is a harmonious combination of my favourite fragrance notes; resinous woods, leather and incense. Also in the mix, but less prominent, are black pepper, tomato leaf, fig and moss. Everyone I’ve handed this perfume too has started with a delicate spray and ended inhaling with their nose to the bottle. It’s addictive stuff. The sillage is low and it doesn’t last particularly long on my skin (few fragrances do) but it definitely falls into the category of fragrance that I wear for myself; comforting and serene.
