Felt Pie Garland

Everyone loves having pie on Thanksgiving, right? I love pie all year round, but it does seem to be the perfect dessert for this particular holiday. So anyway, I was just sitting around daydreaming about pie this weekend (normal activity for me…) and I dreamt up this pie-centric DIY project. So here it is – it’s super cute and easy and would make a perfect last-minute Thanksgiving decoration.

DIY Felt Pie Garland – what you need:

  • felt in various colors (shown here: beige, peach, red, orange and white)
  • scissors
  • hot glue
  • twine
  • embroidery or weaving needle

Okay, so the idea here is to make a few different kinds of pie out of felt, string them together, and hang them up. I chose to include apple, cherry, and pumpkin pies. But you can use your imagination and come up with more. For all of the ones shown, I used beige felt as the background/crust. I started by cutting out triangles of the same size, then I created a scalloped edge at the top.

For the pumpkin pie, I just cut out a smaller triangle in orange and glued it over the crust, then included a couple of white circles over that (because what is a pumpkin pie without whipped cream?).

For the cherry pie, I cut out a smaller red triangle, then another beige triangle that is just a hair smaller than the red one. I cut a few small slits in the smallest beige piece and layered each of the triangles on top of one another.

The apple pie was definitely the most complicated. I started by cutting out a smaller triangle in a peachy color. Then I cut the beige felt into strips and started weaving them together like a lattice pie crust. This took a little bit of time. But once I had enough of the pie covered, I glued the lattice crust around the edges of the pie slice and then cut off the excess felt.

Once all of the pies are made, it’s time to string them together. To do this, string some twine through each slice using a large embroidery or weaving needle. Attach them together at the two top corners as shown in the photo above. Once all of the pieces are attached, hang it up in your home and just wait for your Thanksgiving guests to drool over it. Just make sure you have some real pie around first because this garland will definitely lead to some pie cravings.
