Silas Moccasins: brown leather and denim

Baby’s are so sweet and I don’t get to sew for them much any more. >>Insert sniffles here<< But that’s why my friends need to keep having baby’s–so I can sew for them!

My friend Cassie’s sweet baby boy, Silas, turned one year old last week and I made him a pair of these brown leather and denim moccasins to celebrate. The party was A-DOR-A-BLE and I took a lot of pictures, so I’ll have to ask his mamma if they are ok to share with you guys here. You’ll die of cute, I promise.

Anyway, back to these baby moccasins. I made them in a 12 month size, which I think needs a few adjustments. My poor friends get all my prototypes.

The brown leather is the same I used for the Custom Tool Roll I posted about last week (psst, the $50 leather giveaway is still open on that post!) and you can see what a nice suede it has on the underside. One of my favorite things about this moccasin style is how the back fringe shows off the suede side.

The toe is reinforced with a strong suede on the inside to prevent holes from forming, and the outside is a plaid denim I picked up in Santa Barbara a few years ago. I’ve been hanging onto it for all this time, waiting for the perfect boyish project.

One last thing–I always make the bottom of my moccasins with suede so that little feet have an easier time gripping the ground. On my own kids, I found that the suede grabbed the floor best and kept them from falling.

The good news is, I have plenty of denim and leather left over for more pairs of moccasins. If anyone is interested in buying some, let me know! You can also see a couple of my other baby moccasins in this post, although I’ve changed my pattern a bit since then.

That’s all for now, folks. This is my first item sewn for Kids Clothes Week and it’s not even for one of my kids. Oops! They’ll get my time tomorrow. I hope you’re following along with KCW and seeing all the fun stuff people are sewing for their kids. Inspiration is hitting me from the left and right!

Have a wonderful day, and thanks so much for reading!
