Snow, Knitting, and Sweets

It finally feels like spring is moving into the neighborhood. This morning a new bird chirp was heard and Little M and I were standing at the window looking for the elusive warbler. E's mom didn't know what kind of a bird it as as the call was new to her too. Not too long after we saw a Blue Jay zip past and I think he was our mystery guest. There is quite the variety of birds out here and it's almost impossible to remove the kitties from the windows.

This is the state of my desk lately. Reading up on healthy sleeping habits for babies (great book!), new knitting pattern (this is done, new project has replaced it), empty mug of chai tea, empty knitting needle packets (I adore my ChiaoGoo!!!), and necklace I was wearing last night (WA state silhouette with a heart cut out in it - birthday gift).

The Little is supposed to be taking a nap. Instead he's playing in his crib and teasing me with a couple minutes of silence before he starts chatting or fussing again.

This was the view out our windows at the back of the house a couple of weeks ago. Beautiful! The closest tree has a little bird house on it that some Wrens claimed last year. We are crossing our fingers that they return.

And what do you do when a Grandma who is turning 91 asks for Rice Krispie treats instead of a cake for her birthday? You make her a cake with the treats of course! A couple of posts ago I said she was turning 92...oops.

What we learned by making this
1 - make sure your hands are covered COVERED in butter or cooking spray so that the treats don't stick to you while you are pushing them down into a springform pan.
2 - expect to burn your fingers a little.
3 - make sure to heat your butter and marshmallows exactly the same way for each batch. You can see that the bottom tier looks different. It was cooked longer.
4 - finding something to work as a middle tier when you only have a large and small springform pan isn't easy.
5 - it's the thought that counts!

The perfectionist in me cringed when I saw they were two different colors as well as not equal in height and dimension ratio. But it tasted great, was a great surprise, and was a lot of fun to make with E's Mom. And when you have a family who appreciates gestures as much, if not more, than the gift it's self then why fret when something doesn't turn out to your level of expectation? Just do your best and learn from the experience. I'm so blessed to be part of this family!
