4 Knits You Need for Fall

The smell of pumpkin spice lattes is in the air, and that can only mean one thing: fall is here. It’s time to put away airy sundresses and flip-flops to make room for more substantial outfitting. Stocking up on sweaters—cardis, pullovers, V-necks, you know the drill—is par for the course. But there are a few other cozy knits you’re going to want in your cold weather arsenal. (Seriously, the winter predictions are wicked.)

1. UPSCALE SWEATPANTS
We all have ratty old sweats for binge-watching Netflix, but what about something more office-friendly? Cashmere silhouettes (love my pair from 360 Sweater) are taking the casual staple into upscale territory. Pair with heeled booties and a loosely tucked button-down for a comfy, off-the-couch look.

2. CHUNKY SOCKS
If you want to get the most out of your summer shoe wardrobe, invest in a few pairs of chunky-knit socks. Admittedly, the socks-with- sandals look can be intimidating, but trust me when I say it’s worth it. If you’re really not ready, ease into it with ladylike pumps and a ruffled sock, or oxfords with a dark, tall pair.

3. KNIT CAP
Your mother was right: you should wear a hat. Not only will it keep you warm, but a knit cap over loose, tousled waves gives an air of casual effortlessness. Think about your hair type when picking one out. Fleece-lined options work best on tresses with a bit of texture, while thick, cable-knit styles grab hold to even silky smooth locks.

4. CROPPED SWEATER
Even subzero temperatures can’t stop the crop-top trend, but they are a bit easier to wear. Trade the short style for a cardigan to give a shift dress a new spin. Or layer a cropped sweater over a tailored button-down to be fashion forward in a less ab-baring (and certainly warmer) way.
