In Appreciation of Vintage Village

Yesterday we toddled on down to Stockport to visit my favourite vintage market – The Vintage Village. The sun was in the sky and oh why oh why would we wanna be anywhere else (than erm…Stockport?) than the beautiful glass market hall?

Vintage Village has always been an event Mr Thrifty and I have enjoyed (see previous posts here and here) but other than searching out a specific kind of coffee table (we found one yesterday, do you want me to share it with you this week?), we’ve barely visited a vintage market, charity shop, bootsale or A N Other second hand goods emporium for the best part of a year. Buying a house has meant fripperies had to be put aside for a while.

But yesterday we still needed a coffee table and because the kind of coffee table we liked was reaching £100 on eBay we decided a trip to Vintage Village was in store. The prices tend to be pretty realistic and the quality of pieces; top notch, so we thought it was worth a punt.

Just two minutes in the door and Mr Thrifty had found the exact coffee table I’d been envisioning for years at 1/4 the price we’d seen similar going for on eBay. So we could rest our huntsmen eyes and were left with time to wander the halls and just soak in the atmosphere.

Vintage Village does atmosphere well. I’m not sure what it is about this particular market which lends it an air of excitement but it’s always fun to visit. Perhaps it’s because the organisers set a theme and both customers and stall holders get dressed up. I also think it’s because there’s so much conversation between customers and those selling items that everyone is so at ease.

This market is a cross between shopping and a museum but not a stuffy museum where you can only peer at the item through glass. Nope here you get to hold the item, sense the history and learn whilst having a bit of a laugh. We see so many things at vintage markets which might not necessarily be something we’d like to have in our home, however they are interesting pieces we’d love to know more about. At a great many vintage events I get the feeling that unless you’re 99% sure you want to part with money for the piece then the stall holder isn’t interested in sharing. I’m not sure why it’s different at VV but the sellers are interested in sharing what they know and telling you any stories behind the item.

We came away spending less than our budget for the day and still managed to include a seriously good lunch from award winning The Lord of the Pies stall.
