Sometimes the more expensive option is the better option

Mr Thrifty and I are easily tempted, which is why we have a milk man. Odd leap I know but stick with me, I’ll make my point eventually.

If we nip to the shop for a pint of milk we’ll easily come out with a pint of milk, 2 packets of crisps, a magazine, glazed doughnuts, some curry powder, a new and exciting looking chocolate bar and if they had one – a partridge in a pear tree. So now we don’t nip to the shop to buy milk, we get it delivered. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays we get 2 pints of milk delivered to our door and it costs about double that of milk in the shops.

We’ve been living a thrifty life for a quite a long time now and ‘nipping to the shop for a pint of milk’ was our downfall. We have, it turns out, the willpower of Augustus Gloop in the chocolate factory slurping the liquid chocolate into his trap until he fell into the river. We own our lack of willpower, we have given ourselves a good talking to, we’ve tried, tried, tried and failed. Each time we nip out for milk we’ll easily spend a tenner. So now we get it delivered and whilst per pint it is more expensive it’s the best option for us. It’s a realistic option and already in the few short months we’ve had a milk man we’ve saved a lot of money.

Sometimes the more expensive option is the better option. It certainly is for our milk man.

P.S. Another big part of this for us is using local businesses and keeping our food vaguely local (at least part of the time). We have a dairy close by and our milk man lives on our road and there is so much about that which appeals to us. The milk isn’t organic, it isn’t fancy and it is more expensive but it keeps our money local and that’s hugely important to us.
